This collection of new work focuses on issues at the lexicon-syntax interface. It presents innovative analyses of theoretical issues of aspectual interpretation in a variety of languages. The authors address questions such as to what extent can variation in verbal meaning, and thematic information can be determined in the syntax, and how the interpretation of various syntactic constructions is derived, once lexical information is minimized. A subset of the articles develops theories that take as their starting point the lexical-syntactic framework of the late Ken Hale and Jay Keyser, prominent among which is their own chapter.

40 Days in Heaven: The True Testimony of Seneca Sodi's Visitation to Paradise, the Holy City, The Glory of God's Throne, by Elwood Scott

The amazing and inspiring true testimony of Seneca Sodi's actual visitation to heaven including touring Paradise, the vastness of the Holy City of New Jerusalem and visiting God's Throne for a celebratory praise service attended by millions of saints and angels. The most memorable events in this testimony undoubtedly begin with the family reunions Seneca has with close relatives, such as his grandfather, mother, wife and daughter who died while still an infant of only a few months of age, but who grew up into adulthood in heaven, having been raised by angels, saints and family members who had already made the great journey to Heaven themselves. There is also the lasting impression of utter peace and security, the heavenly atmosphere free from strife, sickness, fear and death, the heavenly society of mankind united into one large extended family shared by death bed conversions, innocent children from every nation who died of war, sickness or other tragedy, and saints of renown. For some the highlight may be Seneca's chance to discuss theology with Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Paul and many others--for others still it could be the overwhelmingly glorious visit to the Throne of God. It's been 100 years since this testimony first came to light, and far from proving to be an isolated story, such heavenly experiences are becoming more and more common. Some more recent testimonies which do much to support this one include H. A. Baker's Visions Beyond the Veil, Mary K. Baxter's visitations to both Heaven as well as Hell, Anna Rountree's The Heavens Opens, and The Priestly Bride, and many others. Heaven is real, and this story will impart hope, strengthen your faith, and is sure to become a spiritual classic.

Get your questions about eternity answered!
By Kimmie Antares 451
This book is out of this world. I have been searching out and reading books from all over the world on the topic of trips to heaven, hell, and the afterlife for nearly three decades now. This book is probably in the top 1% from this genre. All the deeper questions about eternity in heaven and with Christ are explored in great detail. The whole time I read this book, I felt that I was caught up into another realm beyond this dull, dark earth. Seneca Sodi experienced his "40 days" in Heaven around 1909, and cites meetings with Moses (whom he describes as rather tall, flaxen white hair and beard, but without any age or wrinkles as we would normally think him to have), Joshua, King David, as well as the archangel Michael. Perhaps deepest of all are his meetings with Jesus Christ. Seneca also discusses heaven in detail: the fruits on the trees, the perfect flowers, the beautiful music, golden chariots that whiz the inhabitants around at lightning speed. Most important to me is that the information checks out and agrees in every way with the BIble. One part I found particularly fascinating was Seneca's discussion with Moses on the creation of the Earth in "6 days". As I have long suspected (being from a geology background), Moses explains that in eternity and with God, a thousand years is as a day, and describes that these 6 "days" were actually much longer (many epochs, if you will). Many of my questions regarding the mysteries of the Bible, including insight into the Transfiguration and the long-awaited Resurrection of our earthly bodies in the Last Day, are explored in shocking and clear detail. A must read for those who discern and seek with all their hearts a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and His mysteries.

Amazing and healing book. A must have.
By Peter
Feeling the pain of someone who has passed away leads you to look for answers as to what happens to them. This is about a man who went to heaven, how he left earth, the travel from earth to heaven, and the time he spent in heaven. All of it fits together very nicely and it seems to be VERY biblically based. Of course every person will have a personal point of view but most of seems to fit.

The part where some people were objecting was the part I was specifically looking for. The complaints are pure bunk and racist in motivation, people specifically looking for trouble. There are no colors in heaven right now. All or most are spirits, and the sprits inside us are all the same. When we get our resurrected bodies, our glorified bodies - THEN we have real bodies and they should at that time reflect our nationality and skin color. people complaining that is absent from heaven now are just looking for trouble in my opinion, and their opinion is moot.

There will be some things any of us will have a problem with, but they are very very minor. I personally have a problem with the harps. But maybe the policy will be changed by the time I get there - lol.

What this book clearly shows is that Heaven is the real thing and the earth here and now is a shadow of the real thing. There are streets, hiways, buildings with elevators, trains, you kiss your wife or husband, there is a country side and so on. The experience also seems to bear out that there are cars and other interesting things. It makes sense. Heaven isn't a floaty cloudy place, but a real country. In fact, it seems to confirm that Paradise has joined with Heaven and the main part of the place is the Holy City which is described in the Bible and it is surrounded by mileage of land around it on the outside of the 12 pearl gates. People arrive on the land outside the Holy City - yes Jesus is there too - at designated arrival "stations". people arrive at different levels of knowledge of Grace and the finished works of Jesus. Those that need to be taught more will have to learn about the finished works Jesus did for us before entering the Holy City and going into the Throne Room of God. In my opinion, you aren't going to go into the Throne Room without knowing it was all Jesus completed works as the whole reason you are there and none of the works that we did. Foreign theologies are not going to be happening or welcomed into the throne room. No one will stand in there thinking it was their doing that got them their. This will all be learned in Paradise and all will be brought up to speed the theology God wants us to know.

This book helps us to understand that people we would not think to be in Heaven are really there. They may have wasted their whole lives and will see that point when there, but at least they arrived. The book does not teach universal salvation, but makes a point of Jesus and folks accepting Him as the focal point of going to Heaven. The theology is solid and you don't have to read it with an apprehensive heart. it isn't perfect, there are things that I don't agree with, but then i haven't been there yet :)

The peacefulness this book conveys about death is priceless. It causes you to be MUCH more heavenly minded and looking forward to arriving there yourself. it also helps you to understand that a departed loved one was "picked up" in a limousine form (modern vernacular) and driven to an entry port on the outer lands of paradise. Everyone seems to have an urgent desire to go to the Throne Room to visit God at His throne, but people need to be prepared for that to happen. but the message in the book is the urge is strong.

The visit to Heaven lets us know it is much like going to visit a far away city. Yet the surprising thing is how very close the "planet" of heaven really is to the earth. I remember a flight from Miami to Jacksonville Florida. About as soon as we reached normal flying altitude se started our decent to fly into the JAX airport. It gives you the same feeling, about as you leave earth the arrival to heaven starts to happen and it seems they never left our own solar system.

There is so much more to tell you. The book is almost like a manual to what Heaven is like and there are a few surprises in it too. it can help understand what happens the moments after someone dies, and will happen to you when you die. It brings a new meaning to Jesus making attempts over and over to say to believers that when we die we are sleeping and not dead. The body goes to sleep, and we start the most incredible trip of our lives at that very point in time.

I highly recommend this book in a serious way to people who are ready to "leave" or to people who have just experienced a loved one just having left. Death's stinger really gets a crushing with this book. The Holy Spirit can use it to bring peace to our hearts by understanding so much about heaven. Everyone may not receive this book with an open heart, but those that will, will find a jewel worth finding.

A truley blessed experince by sharing a trip with Seneca Sodi's adventure in Heaven
By Charlotte Ball
I think it was one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. It made me feel like I was in heaven at times. Oh, I can hardly
wait until the lord calls me home, and he only touched just a pebble on the sea shore. A wonderful book for non Christians to read too, it will make you want to search for God and his wonderful promises. It has made a new Person out of me. We read about all of this in the Bible but we don't take time to really understand what it actually says. After reading the book and going back to search the scriptures it Is so much more real than before. Now when I sing God's praises I really let the words sink in, before I just sang so many of them without listening to what the words were. Now I feel as though I am really praising God when I sang. Thanks to Seneca Sodi's for sharing his story.

Le Petit Chose
By Stephen Balbach
`Le Petit Chose` (1868), variously published in English as `Little Good-For-Nothing` or `Little What's-His-Name`, was Daudet's first published prose. It is an autobiographical memoir of his childhood and young adulthood in the south of France in part 1; and in part 2 his early days in Paris as a struggling writer, up until his marriage. It was written when he was between the ages of 25 and 28. Generally it is recognized that part 1 is magical while part 2 is overly sentimental and shows Daudet in a less sympathetic light. This review is of part 1 only (both parts are in the single volume).

Daudet is always at his best with a child's view of the world, and recounting his own childhood experiences is some of his best writing. As the 1898 English translation introduction says, "it is one of the most perfect representations in literature of childhood's hopes and fears and of youth's aspirations and defeats. It is perfect because it is real." The scenes of a terrible boarding school are as vivid as anything by Dickens or Bronte, "We too stand somewhat in dread of M. Viot and his keys, we too wonder what Little Black Eyes makes of life, we too have confidence in the rugged, uncouth Abbe Germane."

`Le Petit Chose` is today out of print (except for Public Domain re-prints) and almost completely unknown among English readers, but for French readers it is his 2nd or 3rd most popular book. Recommended highly for Francophiles and lovers of literary memoirs.

Seeing Red, by Lina Meruane

"A penetrating autobiographical novel, and for English-language readers this work serves as a stunning introduction to a remarkable author." — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"This is not a fictionalized memoir of transformation and recovery, but a book that burns in your hands, something sharp and terrifying that bites back." — Anna Zalokostas, Full Stop

"A novel of genius and disturbing intelligence." — Enrique Vila-Matas, author of The Illogic of Kassel

This powerful, profound autobiographical novel describes a young Chilean writer recently relocated to New York for doctoral work who suffers a stroke, leaving her blind and increasingly dependent on those closest to her. Fiction and autobiography intertwine in an intense, visceral, and caustic novel about the relation between the body, illness, science, and human relationships.

Lina Meruane (b. 1970), considered the best woman author of Chile today, has won numerous prestigious international prizes, and lives in New York, where she teaches at NYU.

Review
"Astonishing . . . Meruane's authorial gaze is unflinching. Through the mesh of veins, she holds a microscope not only to the condition suffered by her alter ego, but to the ties between the protagonist and those on whom she is forced to depend, ties strained by Lina's history of illness and her loss of sight. Lina resists all attempts to corral her into victimhood and insists on wielding her agency like a weapon. Her manipulations of Ignacio provide a visceral antidote to infantilizing narratives of illness; Lina's behavior is predatory rather than passive, and Seeing Red becomes a searing commentary on the limits of family relationships and the cruelty that, under duress, we are capable of exerting on those we love." — Charlotte Whittle, Los Angeles Times

“Susan Sontag famously wrote that there are only two nations: the one of the healthy and the one of the sick. Meruane’s corrosive writing is a meditation on a soul blinded not by illness, but by the peculiar destructive spirit produced by self-pity – that dark feeling familiar to any who has suffered their own body’s treason. In other words, all of us. Seeing Red’s spine is a deliciously perverse love story, loaded with surprising, sickening, wonderful erotic material centred in the eyeballs.” — Álvaro Enrigue (author of Sudden Death), TANK Magazine Summer Reading List 2016

"An enigmatic mixture of autobiography and fiction . . . The story reveals its truths through immediacy of description—viscous, repulsive, and beautiful." — The New Yorker

"A story told by Meruane with vivid, unflinching language that will occasionally make readers squirm with its beautiful, brutal honesty. . . . Would we, as Lina did, ask our loved one for one of his eyes, thereby making "us equal, turn us into mirror images for the rest of our lives until death?" Might we, in the throes of passion yearn to suck the very eyes out of our lover, as Meruane writes, "to take possession of them on my palate"? These lines make us fidget, no doubt. Maybe that’s because we don’t want to know what emotions hide in the dark corners of our own hearts." — Beatriz Terrazas, Dallas Morning News

"Intense, physical, flipping from sensual to gory, Seeing Red is a book about degeneration and offers an exhilarating 'fresh eye', as the author puts it, on what it is to be alive." — Joanna Walsh, The National

"Blurring the lines between fiction and memoir, Meruane’s first novel translated into English explores mortality, identity, and personal transformation. . . . This is a penetrating autobiographical novel, and for English-Language readers this work serves as a stunning introduction to a remarkable author." — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"From this moment of darkness, the narrative hurtles forward, obsessed by Lina’s physical and emotional pains, which are examined with a vibrant, Kahloesque fascination. The narrative is also interested in how Lina’s pain stretches out, changing her relationships with the objects and people around her." — M. Lynx Qualey, Electric Lit

One of Literary Hub's "13 Translated Books by Women You Should Read"

"Mesmerizing sentences pile high in this short book, where far more is happening than immediately seems. The failures of the body are set alongside the feats of the imagination to brilliant effect." — San Francisco Chronicle

"Seeing Red is the triumphant realization of a stunning artistic vision, a novel as black and bitter and bloody (and beautiful) as its central conceit. It’s a novel that’s hard to describe. But you know it’s great when you read it." — Aaron Bady, The Nation

"An intriguing short novel . . . A female writer who is losing her sight probes the meaning of language, genre, and the reader's expectations. . . . Meruane fashions a challenging metafiction that ventures into fresh and provocative places." — Kirkus Reviews

“In an autobiographical work full of discomfort, Meruane spares nothing negative, and Seeing Red is astounding and essential for it." — Greg Walklin, Colorado Review

“Meruane’s ability to take readers into the experience of sight loss is extraordinary. Her descriptions are fresh, immediate and memorable, inviting comparisons with passages from Nobel Prize winner José Saramago’s great novel Blindness.” — Ann Morgan, A Year of Reading the World

“Aided by the fine translation from Megan McDowell, newcomers to Meruane's spare prose and caustic wit... will admire the strange force and clarity of this novel that is as painstaking as it is wryly painful.” — Forrest Roth, The Collagist

"A startling, honest portrayal of one woman’s descent into blindness and depression, and the lines of love that float out toward her, 'spiraling and elastic,' that she pushes away, and slowly learns to reach toward. . . . Part meditation, part thriller, Seeing Red is a remarkable work showcasing the talents of a fine writer." — Laura Farmer, Cedar Rapids Gazette

"Stunning . . . As intimate as it is objective, the novel shows how blocked eyesight leads to a heightening of Lucina’s other senses, especially those of perspective, empathy, and, above all, language. Seeing nothing but envisioning everything in immediate, hypnotic detail, Lucina visits [Santiago], undergoes a grueling operation, and watches her romance grow from mere love to a literal—if necessary—eye-for-an-eye devotion." — Laurie G., Politics & Prose Bookstore, Washington, DC (Staff Pick)

"With propulsive language and hallucinatory verve, Lina Meruane explores the relationship between identity and illness. Shifting between New York City and Santiago, between the world of sight and blindness, SEEING RED is a masterclass in taut and poetic storytelling. What Meruane manages in 150 pages is simply miraculous." — Mark Haber, Brazos Bookstore, Houston, TX (Staff Pick)

"An unsettling and disquieting look at a woman's descent into blindness . . . With a first-person narrative chronicling her own ocular decline, SEEING RED bears witness to the inter- and intrapersonal struggles that force the narrator to make sense of the relationships around her, all while relying upon those very people for support, aid, and comfort. Meruane's gifted prose lends the story both immediacy and persuasiveness." — Jeremy Garber, Powell's Books, Portland, OR (Staff Pick)

"In this fierce work of autofiction, Meruane's Lucina (sometimes called Lina) resists the passive position of patient with “an uppercase No,” and her anger allows a rare and powerful intimacy. Those hoping for a neat and satisfying resolution will be disappointed, but the true shape of illness is neither neat nor satisfying, and Seeing Red excels in expressing the full scale of the horror and essential uncertainty of being betrayed by one’s own body." — Amy Berkowitz, author of Tender Points

"Meruane writes further into, rather than through or around, blindness. Her language pulses with the psychological terror of the body’s betrayal; it pulls at the seams of the self, unleashing something deep within. This is not a fictionalized memoir of transformation and recovery, but a book that burns in your hands, something sharp and terrifying that bites back." — Anna Zalokostas, Full Stop

"Instead of a journey into blindness the immediacy of the situation makes it a journey into understanding and life beyond being able to see......at the core this really is a love story, an exploration of what it means to “unconditionally” love somebody, would a parent actually give up an eye for their child?" — Tony Messenger, Messengers Booker blog

"One of Chile's Top Ten Contemporary Writers . . . Her compelling exploration of this rapid change of events for the young narrator is compelling and disconcerting all at once, making for a fascinating read." — The Culture Trip

"A bristling, staccato torrent of vivid imagery and psychological roilings . . . simultaneously disturbing and lyrical. ...Translator Megan McDowell has an excellent ear for Meruane’s prose and skillfully exposes its darkly humorous veins. Seeing Red is a captivating, multilayered debut from a strong young writer." — Rachel Jagareski, Foreword Reviews

"A brilliant exploration of the human condition and exercise in experimental prose. . . . a subversive and feminist text." — Tara Cheesman-Olmsted, The Rumpus

"A vivid understanding of what it is like to lose one’s sight . . . Disturbing and uncomfortable but so worth the read." — Melissa Beck, The Bookbinder's Daughter

"SEEING RED introduces an exciting and vital new voice into the English language, a visceral examination of the fragility and determination of a woman faced with the unknown." — Stephen Sparks, Green Apple Books, San Francisco, CA

"Meruane's voice is searing." — Chris Schahfer, Chicago Center for Literature and Photography

"Meruane is one of the one or two greats in the new generation of Chilean writers who promise to have it all . . . [her] prose has great literary force: it emerges from the hammer blows of conscience, but also from the ungraspable, and from pain."—Roberto Bolaño

"Meruane’s writing is acid, so corrosive, that sometimes sentences dissolve before meeting the end that they deserved.” — Álvaro Enrique, author of Sudden Death

"A merciless book." —Sylvia Molloy, author of Signs of Borges

"When a book is so special, nothing one says about it can do full justice to its quality. One wants to use the review to send a message to the reader in capital letters: 'Don't waste more time; buy the book, read it, and then tell me what you thought.'" — Luiz Paulo Fasccioli, Rascunho (Brazil)

"Lina Meruane avoids sentimentality with a burst of genius: she resorts to black humor and closes the book without closing it." — Tiago Ferro, Peixe Eletrico (Brazil)

"A powerful novel." — Federico Falco, one of Granta's Best Young Spanish Novelists

"[Seeing Red] describes, through sight as metaphor, a world of uncertain horizons opposed to each other...Rather than as a victim, she portrays her narrator with a final effect that reminds the reader of the black humor literature of the last century." — Stefano Gallerani, Il Manifesto (Italy)

By Aaron Bady
This book broke me in good ways. Her artistic vision is stunning and the novel is as black and bitter and bloody (and beautiful) as its central conceit. For the protagonist, life as a blind woman is saturated with experience, overstuffed with a vivid and vital cacophony. Where we might expect a flat expanse of red, the bloody curtain of her blindness exposes a dense texture of experience, a superfluous excess that can be hard to absorb. Without sight to intercept and organize the world as space, the dam bursts; a flood of sound, feeling, smell, temperature, vibration, and tastes, all jostling for attention. Sight creates distance; her blindness closes the gap, and the tactility of the world is aggressive and overwhelming (“What do un-sighted people do with all this sensory detail?” I found myself wondering). The walls catch her hands, and the furniture moves to trip her; bodies collide in space and everything burns or freezes and cuts...

Beautiful writing

This book challenged me. I'm visually impaired from birth. The imagery used is equal parts intriguing and terrifying. It's a must read.

Interesting autobiographical novel
By Marjorie Cunningham
This book is described as a new-to-me genre – autobiographical novel. Apparently the author, Lina Meruane, had a stroke and suffered temporary blindness, necessitating surgery. Her novel’s main character, also named Lina Meruane, is based on the author, also being an author having serious problems with her vision. The literary character literally sees red from the burst blood vessels behind her eye.

The book is written in short chapters with a stream of consciousness aspect to them. Having been through a period of blindness herself, the author writes a very realistic portrayal of a woman’s deterioration of vision and the effects of her impending blindness on not only herself but her loved ones. While Ms. Meruane did a wonderful job describing all of the terrors of blindness and its devastating consequences, there was an element of black humor that I wasn’t able to appreciate. It’s an intelligent read and one I feel I should have been able to immerse myself into more than I was able to.

This book was given to me by the publisher through Edelweiss in return for an honest review.

de-testing and de-grading schools: Authentic Alternatives to Accountability and Standardization (Counterpoints)From Peter Lang Publishin

A century of education and education reform, along with more than three decades of high-stakes testing and accountability, reveals a disturbing paradox: education has a steadfast commitment to testing and grading. This commitment persists despite ample research, theory, and philosophy revealing the corrosive consequences of both testing and grading in an education system designed to support human agency and democratic principles. This revised edited volume brings together a collection of updated and new essays that confronts the failure of testing and grading. The book explores the historical failure of testing and grading; the theoretical and philosophical arguments against testing and grading; the negative influence of tests and grades on social justice, race, class, and gender; and the role that they play in perpetuating a deficit perspective of children. The chapters fall under two broad sections. Part I, Degrading Learning, Detesting Education: The Failure of High-Stake Accountability in Education, includes essays on the historical, theoretical, and philosophical arguments against testing and grading. Part II, De-Grading and De-Testing in a Time of High-Stakes Education Reform, presents practical experiments in de-testing and de-grading classrooms for authentic learning experiences.

Superb well evidenced account of current US education system with huge parallels to UK schooling system. A brilliant compelling read for all who are concerned with the education of the INDIVIDUAL and not selling out to homogeneous drilling and testing.

Excellent book for researchers.
By Jack Stone
This is a must read for anyone truly interested in the battle for Stalingrad and modern urban warfare. Chuikov, who was commander of the Soviet 62nd Army tasked with defending Stalingrad, gives a great first hand account of the battle from his perspective. While there is some honest, genuine reflection in this work, Chuikov's account is tainted by Soviet bias. Chuikov often exagerates the German foe he faced (saying the Luftwaffe habitually launched 3,000 air sorties in a single day...a feat the Luftwaffe only wished they could produce), he states that the Germans regularly lost thousands of dead soldiers in a variety of specific battles (although he has no way of knowing actual German casualty accounts...while soft-selling his own losses), and he describes German soldiers as showing up to the battle field drunk and playing music, something that does not ring true with the discipline-obsessed Wehrmacht, but more so with the Russians' own soldiers. Having said that, Chuikov's account is a must read, bias and all, for anyone interested in this epic struggle between military titans.

The Rock of Stalingrad
By Magnitude
Chuikov's memoirs remain one of the cornerstones of research and understanding into the Soviet version of events in the battle of Stalingrad. Cited by just about every author who writes about the battle, Chuikov provides a first-hand account of the events and efforts that led to Soviet victory in the ruins of the city, though not without some Communist-era quirks.

As an account of the battle, Chuikov provides a one-sided version that is sometimes repetitive, and sometimes sketchy as far as history goes. Nevertheless, it's clear from his memoirs how the Germans were outfought, and outhought, not only by Chuikov, but also many Soviet participants from all ranks.

Chuikov may have benefited from the fact that he started 1942 as a military attache to Chiang Kai Shek. Recalled from foreign service, he was untouched by the defeats that hung over his fellow generals. As a result, he was able to approach the problem of defeating the Germans with a fresh mind. For starters, he thought they were beatable, and he studied the Germans carefully in the summer of 1942, as his 62nd Army retreated in front of the German Case Blue offensive, ending in Stalingrad.

The Germans, Chuikov noticed, grew dependent on air power. The Soviets would counter this by attacking or moving at night, and drawing the Germans to within grenade range, thereby making it harder for the Luftwaffe to identify targets. Stalingrad provided the perfect setting for this close-quarters approach. In a way, the Sixth Army played into their enemy's hands by largely forfeiting many of the advantages that had served the Germans so well up to this point.

Drawing the Germans in close, the Soviets constantly attacked and counterattacked in an "active defense." The Soviets developed deep defensive webs that lured the Germans into ambushes and flanking fire. German tanks would drive forward with infantry behind them; the Soviets would force the infantry to take cover and then destroy the isolated tanks. Again and again the Germans would push forward, and again and again the Soviets pushed them back. The Soviets formed mission-specific storm groups (more than a squad, but less than a platoon) to accomplish certain battlefield objectives. Artillery, reconnaissance, infantry, dug-in tanks all worked together in a coordinated fashion. Soviet tactics proved flexible, and their resolve steely. Every citizen and soldier believed that this was a last stand, and they knew that long months of retreating ended at the Volga.

Far from taking the credit for himself, Chuikov praises everyone who served in his command. Women, sappers, signallers, ferrymen, medics, tankers, generals, soldiers; just about everyone helped achieve this victory. Even the workers from the nearby factories chipped in, repairing tanks.

How much of Chuikov's narrative can be attributed to Soviet propaganda is a good question, but even the most cynical Cold Warrior would have to begrudge the Soviet people a certain amount of determination and unity when their backs were against the wall; they did win here, after all. While Chuikov does stray into over-the-top dogma, he also pulls in accounts from minor actors in a way that is charming, and in some ways a good counterpoint to many memoirs of similar WWII generals.

As one such highlight, the Zaitsev-Koenig duel is described, roughly a decade before William Craig made it famous in "Enemy at the Gates." Letters and other personal accounts (true or not) are woven throughout the memoir, which is most un-general-like in this way. One is left with a sense that the Soviet people were proud of its collective accomplishments, a thought echoed in documentary interviews with survivors. Indeed, it may be fair to say that this was the Soviet Union's "Greatest Generation"; whether we want to believe that is less important than the fact that these people believed it about themselves, and this spirit can be palpably felt here.

Certainly, the Soviet people and soldiers rallied when their country needed them most, but Chuikov, probably toeing the line, says that the party was instrumental to this success. What the everyday Soviet was fighting for is less clear, and the occasional Imperial Russian analogies (such as Napoleon's defeat) suggest that the Soviets were fighting for their very existence (their own as well as their nation's). A reader would be wise to heed Hanson Baldwin's caveats in the introduction, and to get the other side of the story, strikingly silent here, as told in Antony Beevor's "Stalingrad."

Even so, Chuikov's memoir remains an indispensible account from a Soviet general of a key Soviet victory in WWII, and contains many insights on how that battle was won.
