He then takes the reader through the bulk of the criminal law's 'general part' showing how conflicts from reform ideology emerge within criminal law. An historical and political logic underlies its illogicalities, giving it its 'shape'. The author presents a sceptical critique of the liberal positivist tradition in criminal law scholarship, and a social analysis of both its practical necessity and intellectual impossibility. He shows how the ideology of individual legal justice was imposed as a means of excluding alternative political voices, while recognising its importance for the survival of the liberal polity.

About the Author
The oldest of nine children, award-winning author Jim Wood is a natural coach and mentor. His mission is to share his passion for personal finance by increasing financial literacy, especially for those aged 18 to 30 who can most benefit from this knowledge. Wood has appeared on numerous local and national media programs, including PBS televisions's "The Nightly Business Report." Jim retired from his corporate job at age 47 after 25 years in high tech. He held positions as a software engineer, information technology manager, and business strategy manager. He earned a B.A. in Psychology with Distinction from Boston University. He also holds an M.S. in Engineering Management from Stanford University. Jim lives in San Diego, California with his wife and son.

Ramen no more!

As someone who ate a lot of ramen in his 20s and 30s (while reading lots of money management and personal finance books and not applying what they suggested), I can say from personal experience that Jim Wood's book captures and effectively conveys what young people need to know about building wealth.

Wood combines solid, time-tested advice with an engaging style and personal anecdotes in an easy-to-read book. With the US economy stuck in the doldrums, the sooner anyone applies Wood's suggestions the better. Particularly useful are Wood's many ideas about how to find and use money that leaks out of pockets or is already lost in the couch. Few of them imply any significant lifestyle changes but all add up to big bucks over time. It's the kind of trade-off that everyone can afford. Wood's formula really boils down to "add a little discipline and watch your piggy bank fatten up." "From Ramen to Riches" would have been a lot more useful to me when I was in business school than most of the over-written, over-priced text books we were required to read.

Everyone needs to read this book

I was skeptical that I would learn much from this book. I have a degree in economics and an MBA. I have invested conservatively over my lifetime and expected no surprises. Boy was I surprised.

There are three reasons to buy this book.
1. It is very readable. Because it is plain-written, non-financial readers will find this a very easy read. No big words or formulas, just straight talk.
2. The breadth of the topic. Woods gives you "The Big Picture" and then does a marvelous job of drilling down to how to buy a car, a house, invest, and manage your finances including credit cards.
3. Clarity of explanations. He provides powerful models that help you understand the concepts and the power of your decisions.

Finally, this book is not just for those of us who have money to invest - it is really for everyone including folks on a very small income trying to stretch every penny.

A tasty dish of well-seasoned advice...

Saving $10 -- good. Spending $9.95 to buy this book -- better! As a senior banking officer, I have a pretty good concept of most things financial. However, when talking to young people about personal finance, including the two growing up in my house, I find myself either... A. At a loss for words, or, B. Putting out way too many words, and quickly losing my audience. Wood's book is genius. Complex concepts are made remarkably simple; the valuable lessons are cloaked in enough humor that they don't go down like lessons at all. Our family's gift closet is stocked with this book. Every high school and college graduate we care about will receive Wood's book. From Ramen to Riches is going to put a lot of people on the path to bright financial futures.

Excellent edition, excellent play

J.R. Mulryne's edition of *The Spanish Tragedy* is without a doubt the best that may at present be bought: informative, helpful, intelligent and accurate in introducing the text, presenting it, and glossing difficult words and phrases where necessary. The play is among the most exciting and artistic of its period. Kyd writes, and constructs his plot, with a level of skill comparable to that of Shakespeare, who was much influenced by *The Spanish Tragedy*, particularly in writing *Hamlet*, which is possibly yet "richer", but undoubtedly less clear and focused. Kyd shows us in an extremely sophisticated way the workings of revenge, both at an earthly and at a supernatural level. From the beginning the audience knows, in a way that the characters do not, that the supernatural world will insist on revenge. The pain of those who suffer injustice here on earth and clamour for revenge is painful to behold. Ultimately, however, in a baffling way, evildoers are punished: Hieronimo, the main character, manages to take matters into his own hands after exhausting all other possibilities, and thus ironically enacts the wishes of the higher powers. The FORM of Hieronimo's revenge is extraordinarily interesting: under the cloak of art - of a theatrical plot - he manages to kill his evil opponents quite easily. The tension between "art" and "life" is thus handled by Kyd in a very innovative fashion which still shocks modern spectators and readers. The role of language, too, is called into question: much of the play demonstrates that in real life finally action does speak louder than words, which often do not make their point or simply get ignored. Any reader who wants to get a notion of the superb quality of plays written by Shakespeare's contemporaries is certain to admire and enjoy this striking work of art. - Joost Daalder, Professor of English, Flinders University, South Australia

New Mermaids footnotes are very helpful - Updated review February, 2008

The Spanish Tragedy (1592) was a remarkably popular Elizabethan revenge play that substantially influenced other Elizabethan playwrights including Shakespeare. The gruesome, neo-Senecan melodrama, Titus Andronicus, dates from 1594; Hamlet was first performed in 1602.

I knew little about The Spanish Tragedy at the time of my first reading (and review) in 2003. In retrospect I failed to appreciate fully Thomas Kyd's Senecan framework, especially the significance of the prologue by the ghost of Andrea, the role of the supernatural Revenge, and the varied scenes in the underworld of Roman mythology - all found in the first act. I am not certain whether I even realized that the ghost Andrea and Revenge remained on stage throughout the play, invisible to the actors, but clearly visible to the audience.

I wrote that although I was confused with intervention of pagan gods and that the numerous murders seemed excessive, I still considered Kyd's tragedy warranted four stars. Having recently returned to The Spanish Tragedy (as part of a collection of Elizabethan revenge tragedies), I am now much more enthusiastic (a solid five stars).

I no longer find the two intertwined plots to be puzzling. I now see the thoughtless injustice suffered by Hieronimo in the Spanish court as mirrored in the random, capricious behavior of the gods: the confusion the deceased Andrea encountered upon entering the underworld, Proserpine's arbitrary, even frivolous suggestion for Revenge to aid Andrea, and the gods's uneven punishments meted out to the murderers of Horatio (and to others only marginally involved with crime). This disturbing parallel reflects Kyd's nihilistic and pessimistic view of life: not even the intervention of the gods offers any assurance of rational justice.

New Mermaids edition: The footnotes come in two forms. The first provides definitions for unfamiliar or archaic words, or words whose meanings have changed significantly. The second offers explanations of plot subtleties, differences in interpretations by experts, and possible influences on later plays by Shakespeare ans others. Also, translations are provided for Kyd's frequent quotations in Latin, many from Seneca's writings.

A beautiful, yet forgotten play

"The Spanish Tragedy" is one of the rarest books of its kind, which has revenge as its central theme, and though it portrays other themes, they all, essentially are secondary to the main theme.
What pains me, as a reader is that its worth and merit are so obscurely recognised. It's not given the honour it deserves. Thomas Kyd, the author's life is as obscure as his greatest work. This, despite the fact that he was one of the formative influences on Shakespeare. In fact, much of the technique of dramturgy of Shakespeare, especially in Hamlet, is borrowed from "The Spanish Tragedy"--the enactment of a play within a play, as is done in the climax.
The play reflects revenge at every turn--whether it be of Bellimperia's or Horatio's or Hieronimo's. And Kyd has made masterful use of the blank verse and symbolism to lay before the reader, the emotions which his characters undergo. Hieronimo's incessant lament at the treacherous murder of his son, his almost insane babblings...are but fine examples of the use of blank verse in a play.
It's a pity that this work is so rare--in fact it's almost out of print. Wish someone'll do something to popularise it and give it its due.

A book likely to mislead more than help

Of the reviews so far published on Amazon, only the one which gives this book no more than one star seems to me to hit the nail on the head, though possibly two stars might also have been defensible. The major trouble with the book is that a vast number of pieces in the book were produced for sale in recent times - almost always to tourists or foreign "amateur" buyers - while the general purpose is to make us believe that we are looking at traditional old pieces. That, by itself, is a very bad practice, even if the misjudgements spring from ignorance rather than a wish to mislead. The fact that the Met is associated with the publication makes it potentially the more harmful: at this rate fewer and fewer people will be able to make proper distinctions between old, authentic pieces used within the cultures where they were made, and new ones professedly the same, but in fact entirely different in structure, design, meaning etc and thus doomed to give a false notion of what has been a great tradition of jewellery-making. The question is not whether the modern pieces are beautiful, but whether they are correctly described, and as such this book should not have been published in its present form. Reviewers and those commenting in correspondence and websites outside Amazon have also draw attention to this book's failings, but I write this as so far on Amazon only one other reviewer seems to me to have identified what is wrong with this book.

the MET's new clothing

This book is a tremendous embarrassment to the MET's reputation for authoritative scholarly publications. There are plenty of primary resources about Central Asian and Turkmen jewelry. Dieter and Reinhold Schletzer's "Old Silver Jewelry of the Turkoman" is an excellent one for starters, (and has been translated and published in English).
The examples illustrated in this book are overwhelmingly of dubious authenticity and age.Describing something as "20th Century" is a euphemism for " quite new, last 20 years". Many of the pieces are fantasy productions created for unwitting buyers and were never used or intended for use by actual Turkmen. Real Turkmen pendants for example are never 2 sided, the backs ( undisplayed) were left very simple and unadorned.The use of 'resin'(plastic) inlays is quite flagrantly not authentic. There are other obvious misidentifications such as European pressed glass described as "carnelian"- simple naked eye inspections yield this, no special science is needed.
This book is going to generate a fierce amount of criticism among knowledgeable specialists and can be dismissed as a vanity publication of very little scholarly worth.

A well illustrated book

This book on Turkmen jewelry is very well illustrated but is lacking some new research especially about the making of the jewelry. The dating of most of the pieces is very general and is given as late 19th early 20th, but some pieces look to me quite late in the 20th cent. if not even done for the antiquarian market. This impression is confirmed by another review of somebody more experienced than me on the subject. In the book there are no picture of contemporary Turkmen women wearing jewelry and few historical images, some already published in the past in other books.
