Difference in Editions: 4th vs 3rd
By A.K.
Looks like this edition has been refreshed. So far the price is ~$13 cheaper than the previous edition. Here's a list of changes: [...]
New To This Edition
*Edits to the entire text have clarified arguments and eliminated ambiguities.
*New problems and new worked examples appear throughout, while selected unsuccessful ones have been eliminated.
*All 450 figures have been reviewed for accuracy and updated where necessary.
*A new section on magnetic work helps to eliminate teachers' misconception that magnetic forces do not work. The new section fully explores the actual mechanism in cases where magnetic forces are actually working.
*Erroneous passages have been corrected. In particular, misleading copy (specifically the treatment of "hidden momentum") has been fixed.
*Citations of recent literature appear throughout for those who wish to pursue a particular topic in greater depth. This literature helps reinforce the point that electrodynamics is a vibrant and dynamic field, even after 150 years.

The book is easy to follow, it presents the subject matter in a well formatted fashion.

Good intermediate level book
By AnomalousEllipse
I am reading this alongside the text by Ohanian and this is a bit lower level. The explanations of how to do problems are much better but Ohanian is far superior at explaining what is going on physically and mathematically. This book is good to have because Ohanian uses CGS units so if I have a need for an equation in MKS I can pull it out of this book already having understood the material I learned in Ohanian. I would say use both in tandem.

Great text, terrible binding
By luciditycheck
*UPDATE* I am continuing to use the book in winter term for the second term of E&M. Lots of pages have now fallen out and you can see the notches on each page in most parts of the book. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Awful quality. Buy the paperback version at least--though I have seen pages coming out on that one too. Better yet, buy the e book. unfortunately I like having a physical book...

-original review-

The content is good, and fairly well organized. I didn't ever struggle to learn from the text and use lecture as supplement.

But as others have said, the physicality of the book is terrible. I have the standard hardcover version and have only been using it since late September (it's December now). The spine crackles incessantly and loudly when the book is moved about, and the glue seems to weakly hold the pages--a huge section in chapter 4 of my text is falling out and one page is fully detached already. It wasn't like this at the start of the term, so I think carrying the book in my backpack caused damage.

If you buy the hardcover, don't carry the book around. Just download a copy from the internet and keep that on your phone or tablet or whatever. If you need to buy this book for a class (let's face it, who doesn't?), buy the paperback version if you can.

The Meaning of Fossils: Episodes in the History of Palaeontology, by Martin J. S. Rudwick

"It is not often that a work can literally rewrite a person's view of a subject. And this is exactly what Rudwick's book should do for many paleontologists' view of the history of their own field."—Stephen J. Gould, Paleobotany and Palynology

"Rudwick has not merely written the first book-length history of palaeontology in the English language; he has written a very intelligent one. . . . His accounts of sources are rounded and organic: he treats the structure of arguments as Cuvier handled fossil bones."—Roy S. Porter, History of Science

Good Modern Science History
By Russell Cashman
I only gave this book 4 stars because parts of it can be a little difficult to follow, but anyone really interested in the history of science in general or the largely neglected history of paleontology in particular will find a wealth of fascinating information within it. For example it untangles what Cuvier really thought about geological catastrophes from the beliefs of the English geologists who used his work in support of natural theology, a topic on which there has been considerable confustion, especially in the English speaking world. Rudwick is careful to treat each topic in proper historical context that lets you understand what the people involved and their contemporaries really thought about what they were doing, not just what those developments would mean to the future. This book was written more than a decade before the "Science Wars" of the 1990's but it clearly demonstrates that it is possible to find a middle way and write science history in a way that puts each development in the proper philosophical and social context for its time, without loosing track of the fact that science is a progressive activity in which knowledge builds on itself and improves over time. The discussion of the complexities of the pre 18th century debate on the nature and origin of fossils, which seems so obvious to us today, but was far from obvious at the time, is alone worth the price of the book.

A "must read" for palaeontology students!
By Alan R. Holyoak
Rudwick chose the title "The Meaning of Fossils: Episodes in the History of Palaeontology" for his book, but I think that a subtitle more descriptive of the contents would be something like "Essays on the History of Palaeontology." A subtle difference, perhaps, but meaningful, since in many respects this book is about the people behind the fossils as much as it is about fossils themselves.
The book includes the following contents:
1) Fossil objects -- this section presents ideas about what people thought fossils were before they realized they were related in any way to once-living things. It also includes early work on fossils, their descriptions, the light bulb going on about where fossils really come from, and related topics.
2) Natural antiquities -- this section presents an example describing how we came to the realization that fossils really are parts and pieces of things that were one alive -- all from study of fossil and living sharks' teeth. This section also describes alternative explanations (from antiquity) that explain where fossils came from...interesting stuff.
3) Life's revolutions -- this section describes Cuvier's work and evidence he presented that showed that there is, in fact, a process of extinction that operates on earth. This thought, that a kind of living thing (a species), that was once alive are all now dead was a revolutionary thought! This section also introduces the notion of geologic time...deep time, of a length not realized or considered before...another revolution in thought.
4) Uniformity and progress -- this section includes a description of Lyell's new view of geology and geologic processes, that an ongoing gradual process of small magnitude can, over long periods of time produce all observable geological features. That idea fed into the new ideas being applied to fossils, the appearance and disappearance of fossil species.
5) Life's ancestry -- this section discusses the importance of actually looking and seeing for one's self, as Heinrich-Georg Bronn's work did by "Being taught by nature (Natura doceri)." There is also a discussion of what "species" means, and how that plays into the whole idea of fossil and extinct things as described by the evolutionary theories of Wallace and Darwin.
This is a good book with good examples. It provides an excellent historical perspective on the development of thinking relative to palaeontology. This book should be read by every student of palaeontology, and by most biology students as well!
Great stuff!
5 stars all the way (though the title could use a little work).
Alan Holyoak, Dept of Biology, Manchester College, IN

A history of the meaning of fossils
By Laurence Chalem
If you're looking for specific fossils and their meaning, this isn't the book for you. For those, see nearly anything paleontology. This book, painstakingly written, presents a history of the meaning of fossils, starting with the first book on the subject written by Gesner in the 16th century. Highly recommended if you appreciate well-written books authored by retired professors that still care about what's taught in their field.

Not a real reference book.
By Joel G. Dietrich
This book, while advertised as a reference book hardly qualifies. It is printed on cheap paper, is not typeset, and looks like a cheap copy machine generated collection of a hand-made book. Definitely not worth the money...I don't recommend this one.

Lizzie Davenport has been reincarnated from 1815, England... but she doesn't know it until she meets her soul mate from the past and he triggers her memories to gradually return.

When Drew Carmichael transfers into Lizzie's high school, she feels a connection to him, like she knows him. But for reasons Lizzie doesn't understand, he wants nothing to do with her. Why does he keep pushing her away?

Lizzie knows she should let go of her fascination with Drew, but fighting fate isn't easy, and she's determined to unravel the mysteries of the past... no matter how deadly those secrets might be.

From the Author
A Q & A with Michelle Madow, the author of Remembrance!

Q: What was your inspiration for Remembrance?

A: Remembrance was inspired by Taylor Swift's "Love Story" music video. In the video, Taylor sees a guy while walking through campus, and the moment their eyes connect, the scene flashes to the two of them dancing at a beautiful ball dressed in clothes that appear to be from around the year 1815. After watching the video, the characters and story in Remembrance started to piece together in my mind. I started to write it down, and ended up with a finished novel!

Q: How many books will there be in the series?

A: Remembrance is the first part of the Transcend Time Saga, which is told in three parts. The second part is a short story called Vengeance, and the third part is the novel that concludes the Saga, Timeless.

Q: Where can we find you online?

A: I love communicating with fans online! On my website, michellemadow.com, there are links to my Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and all my other social media sites. Be sure to add me on there, because I love meeting and talking to people who enjoyed my books!

I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates reading about time travelling. The way the story unfolds isn't like the other time travelling stories I have read. The author provided the reader just amount of detail to continue to find out more. I am looking forward to the next book.

Benjamin Creme presents a compelling vision of the future. With Maitreya, the World Teacher, and His disciples the Masters of Wisdom openly offering Their guidance, humanity will create a civilization worthy of its divine potential. Peace will be established; sharing the world's resources the norm; maintaining our environment a top priority. The new education will teach the fact of the soul and the evolution of consciousness. The cities of the world will be transformed into centres of great beauty. This book offers invaluable wisdom on a vast range of topics. It includes Maitreya's priorities for the future, and interviews with a Master of Wisdom on 'The Challenge of the 21st Century'. It explores karma and reincarnation, the origin of humanity, meditation and service, the Plan of evolution, and other fundamental concepts of the Ageless Wisdom Teachings. It includes a fascinating look from an esoteric, spiritual perspective at 10 famous artists - among them Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. Like the first two volumes of Maitreya's Mission, this work combines profound spiritual truths with practical solutions to today's most vexing problems. It is indeed a message of hope for a humanity ready to "begin the creation of a civilization such as this world has never yet seen".

Review

Maitreya s Mission Volume Three (MMIII) expands upon Maitreya s priorities in its very first chapter. There are many nuances to the well-known food, education, shelter and healthcare basics, since in order to provide these essentials in a consistent manner, men and women must strengthen their sense of brotherhood through a political system that guarantees non-aggression and peace. The role of the United Nations is crucial in this respect, not only because it will represent the true parliament of the world, but also for its managerial role as distributor of the resources of the planet. Benjamin Creme reminds us of the difference between a world government which will not exist as such, since Maitreya will not head up any organisation and a world parliament in which the United Nations is expected to be powerful enough to act in the name of humanity , a debating chamber to air and settle international problems . So far the United Nations has been deprived of its true function... with scenarios such as the Middle East, Africa or North Korea growing increasingly dangerous for the political balance of the world...

Chapter 2 is devoted to the Challenges of the 21st Century , which apart from the impending economic and political crises on which MMII focused its contents is essentially a crisis of the environment. Without a proper ecological balance, planet Earth would cease to exist. And since humanity has abused and is abusing the environment, the work of the Space Brothers has long been fundamental in avoiding further damage. Life on this planet would be utter misery were it not for the help of our Space Brothers who neutralize this pollution and render it harmless within karmic limits . This is in fact what we have witnessed in recent years with increasing UFO sightings and even Maitreya s star , with its extra planetary nature, that alerts us to Maitreya s emergence...

The details and full repercussion of Maitreya s emergence on the Day of Declaration is the focus of Chapter 3, in which Benjamin Creme s Master explains the actual experience of Maitreya s presence among us... We can also read in this chapter a long succession of miracles from visions of the Madonna to the Hindu milk miracle and the crosses of light that offer a highly informative perspective on the original and inspiring ways in which Hierarchy has been helping humanity from all traditions, cultures and frames of mind...

Chapter 5 includes a long appraisal of several master painters with their most relevant contributions in the artistic field as well as their ray structures and point in evolution. These artists were inspired by Maitreya and it is also interesting to note the influence on their work of the rays of the nations in which they were born...

In Chater 6 we move from art to science. The science of the Antahkarana is probably the most important science of the coming time a science that is as yet unknown to humanity but it will be the coming science of the mind of the New Age, the science of building the bridge between lower and higher man ...

Maitreya s Mission Volume Three includes another most interesting and useful feature: an updated appendix containing the list of initiates. Besides the curiosity that these data trigger in readers, we can go beyond the numbers themselves and study this information bearing in mind the activity of the disciple, his or her time frame and contribution to the world. With this last volume in the Maitreya s Mission book series, Benjamin Creme reminds us how the energies that we are given at a certain time can be used (or misused) in the creativity and beautification of life as an ever consciously aware experience.

EXCERPT FROM THE PREFACE
by Benjamin Creme

Humanity today is living at a unique time in its history. The events that I submit are now under way will transform our lives, our world, in the most fundamental, radical fashion, within a relatively short number of years. We are at the end of a civilization, and therefore at the beginning of a new one: if we would have it so, this can be the most brilliant in our long history.

Most people will know that we are entering a new era, a new cosmic cycle. We call it the Age of Aquarius because of the particular relationship now being formed in space between our solar system and the constellation of Aquarius. In its cyclic movement around the heavens, our solar system has come into a definite energetic alignment with that constellation, which will continue for the next 2,350 years, more or less. This alignment causes the Earth to become saturated with the cosmic energies of Aquarius. Every civilization, beginning roughly every 2,000 years, is the result of this changing cosmic relationship.

As we near the end of the century, a powerful thoughtform of destruction is gripping the minds of millions of people. Throughout the world there is a "doomsday complex." As a result of misunderstanding the prognostications of people like Edgar Cayce, Nostradamus and others, people have the idea that towards the end of the century there will be some great catastrophic event in which the world will be physically changed: mountains will rise and many countries, perhaps continents, will sink under the sea. This belief is widespread and it comes largely from a misunderstanding of history and of scriptures which seem to point to such an apocalyptic end to the world.

As we enter a new age, everything changes. Political, economic, religious and social forms inevitably change under the impact of the new, powerful, cosmic energies that enter our lives. The foretold destruction I believe is altogether exaggerated. Countries will not go under the oceans. The oceans will not rise as mountains. The cataclysm which has been foretold by so many, emanating in the main from the astral planes--the planes of illusion--has little foundation in fact. Change there will be, but change for the better.

We are about to enter an era in which the innate spiritual nature of humanity will begin to express itself in a mass form. Countless millions throughout the world will awaken to the true purpose of their lives. A deeper, more soundly-based attitude to life will develop and people will recognize themselves as souls--souls in incarnation. They will come to understand the purpose of their incarnation, and, more and more, they will take a conscious part in their own evolution, creating modes of freedom and justice which this world has never before seen. Freedom and justice, and therefore peace, will allow the divine, spiritual aspect of humanity to come to the fore and be given expression, not only as a religious experience, but in every department of life. In politics, economics and education, in art and science, the inner awareness of our spiritual nature will increasingly be demonstrated. This will allow the discovery of a science, and the control over the forces of nature, which will give humanity unlimited power over its environment.

All of this awaits us as we enter the new cycle. Far from destruction, we shall enter an era of unprecedented creativity and beauty of life. And this in large measure because of the re-entry into our lives of a group of men without fault, spiritual giants--from our point of view, perfected men. These are men who have gone ahead of us in evolution, and have completed the journey on which we are still engaged. They need no longer live on this planet, but accept the responsibility of remaining here to guide the rest of us to that same perfection. They have many names: the Great White Brotherhood, the Society of Illumined Minds, the Elder Brothers of humanity, the Teachers, the Guides, the Mahatmas, the Masters of Wisdom and the Lords of Compassion.

Cycle after cycle, one of these Great Ones has come into the world to teach humanity the way forward, the next step in our evolution to perfection ... Some 2,600 years ago, Gautama Buddha prophesied that at the beginning of this cycle there would come into the world another great teacher, a Buddha like Himself, by name Maitreya. Maitreya, He said, would inspire humanity to create a brilliant golden civilization based, as He put it, on Righteousness and Truth. In June 1945--significantly at the end of the Second World War--the Lord Maitreya announced His intention to return to the world at the earliest possible moment, if humanity would take the first steps to put its house in order. He said He would come when a measure of peace had been restored to the world; when the principle of sharing was beginning to govern economic affairs; and when the energy of goodwill, the lowest aspect of love, was manifesting, and leading to the establishment of right human relationships ... This event would be the externalization of the activity of the Masters for the first time in nearly 100,000 years.

An eloquent & absorbing expedition into the shape of reality
By A Customer
The latest volume in the series clarifying the mission of Maitreya, the World Teacher, and His disciples the Masters of Wisdom. Again, published in easily digested format of questions and answers. The future is bright for humanity. Peace. Sharing. Conservation. The broadening of consciousness. Yes, and beauty. Everything you can imagine -- actually, everything you can intuit -- is here in this book. Illusion, reality, the meaning of angels, devas, spiritual valuations of ten famous painters, earthquakes, education, ringing in the ears, healthy eating, the inhabitants of Jupiter, spiritual interviews. Point? "To consolidate the treasure of the past and inspire the marvels of the future." In the back, a list of initiates, their rays and stages of evolution. Also, a very useful, complete glossary of terms. Creme is consistent, perceptive, a believer in the evidence of things not seen. "We are spiritual Beings, literally gods, who reflect themselves on the soul-plane as the human soul, which acts as an intermediary between that divinity and the personality on the physical plane." An eloquent and absorbing expedition into the shape of reality. [The Book Reader]

For those about to rock!
By initiateofpeace
As the world continues its distructive path towards materialism, we find jewels such as this book and the two previous volumes. I recommend anyone (including sceptics) to read these books and The Ageless Wisdom teachings. One key for discovering its contents in full fashion is to have an open heart. The lessons and information contained within are practical and clearly express the need of the hour for humanity. " May all the beings in the world be happy, always " rings throughout the book, if we so choose to see the light.

Benjamin Creme is a controversial person. For nearly 20 years he has written and lectured regarding his conviction that Maitreya, a Messianic deliverer, is not only living in London at this time but soon plans to reveal himself to people all over the world by means of television. Such an appearance would inaugurate the building of a new civilization, an enterprise involving the dissolution of many structures and institutions which no longer serve humanity. The 73-year-old Creme has gone out on a limb. He claims that most of the material in this book is being given through him by a master in the Himalayas, with whom he is in constant telepathic contact. He is optimistic about what is to come, certain of his mission, and erudite in the manner in which he communicates. Having studied and appreciated the writings of Alice Bailey (which, along with Blavatsky's writings, form the foundation of Creme's teachings), my own hope is that the dramatic changes which he predicts will actually come to pass. I also look forward to what he refers to as the "externalization of the hierarchy", because those of us who feel we are here to help usher in the changes need all the help we can get, from this side as well as the other. I do not agree with everything that Mr. Creme says in the 704 pages of this tome. There are, in fact, some serious questions raised with regard to a number of issues, particularly those having to do with the role of the feminine relative to spiritual development and the so-called spiritual hierarchy. The teachings of DK through Alice Bailey, after all, are decidedly linear and masculine, and there is more to the nature of things than just that perspective. On the whole, however, I believe that Maitreya's Mission 3 is a valuable book. Creme speaks clearly and knowledgeably about what he believes is required to remedy many of the problems that now beset mankind, and much of this is in the form of brief articles and question-and-answer sessions, which makes interesting "pick-up" reading. His discussions of timelessness, the art of waiting, the nature of evil, meditation, and the initiatory process, among many other subjects, are fascinating reading. If one is interested in a book that is down-to-earth and far-out at the same time, I strongly recommend it. [Dan Dohrmann]

ONE OF JUNG'S LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANT PSYCHOANALYTIC ESSAYS
By Steven H Propp
Jung states in the Foreword, "In this book I am concerned with the 'classical' form of transference and its phenomenology... It is not intended for the beginner who would first have to be instructed in such matters, but is addressed exclusively to those who have already gained sufficient experience from their own practice. My object is to provide some kind of orientation in this newly discovered and still unexplored territory, and to acquaint the reader with some of its problems."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Suddenly (Freud) asked me out of the blue, 'And what do you think about the transference?' I replied with the deepest conviction that it was the alpha and omega of the analytical method, whereupon he said, 'Then you have grasped the main thing.'" (Pg. 8)
"This solution is normal and satisfying in that the dogmatically formulated truths of the Christian Church express, almost perfectly, the nature of psychic experience." (Pg. 29)
"Whenever an instinctive force---i.e., a certain sum of psychic energy---is driven into the background through a one-sided (in this case, exogamous) attitude on the part of the conscious mind, it leads to a dissociation of personality." (Pg. 67)
"Intellectual responsibility seems always to have been the alchemists' weak spot, though a few of them tell us plainly enough how we are to regard their peculiar language." (Pg. 125)
"The theoria of alchemy, as I think I have shown, is for the most part a projection of unconscious contents, or those archetypal forms which are characteristic of all pure fantasy-products, such as are to be met with in myths and fairy-tales..." (Pg. 15)

The Apex, Not The Ape
By The Wingchair Critic
The penultimate title of C.G. Jung's 20-volume Collected Works, 'The Psychology of the Transference' is a short, seemingly complex book which readily rewards the reader who perseveres and is unintimidated by Jung's lengthy sentences, the alchemical illustrations, or the numerous passages in Latin.

Jung's subject is his discovery that the "great work" of the 16th and 17th century alchemists--a search for the 'philosopher's stone' of 'psychic wholeness' (as opposed to 'psychic perfection')--corresponds closely to the psychological process of the transference (a dynamic set of duo projections of unconscious psychic contents).

The alchemical process mysteriously corresponds not only the transference possible between psychologist and patient, but between any two individuals who spontaneously (unconsciously) constellate some part of the other's psyche through normal human interaction.

However, as with all of Jung's later work, the book's larger focus is the psychic evolution of the individual. The pivotal message of 'The Psychology of the Transference' is that the process of cautiously evolving one's consciousness to the hypothetical point of 'individuation' or 'integration,' is primarily a moral and ethical one. The book stresses that it is also a critically necessary process, however painful and potentially dangerous. In Jung's estimation, mankind has no choice but to accept the challenge of psychic evolution: the alternative is a perpetual present state of misunderstanding, hatred, suspicion, bigotry, oppression, war, and genocide.

Like Freud, Jung believed that man's psyche contains an enormous multi-tier unconscious reservoir, one which not only dwarfs man's generally narrow consciousness but is also the matrix in which consciousness originated (thus the alchemical motto "high rests on low").

The unconscious is the original abode of all drives, demons, and daimons, all instincts and angels, all creativity and appetites for destruction. Since many of its contents are unacceptable to modern man--the most foundational of these being the incest complex--these damned and rejected contexts are not and cannot be readily integrated into consciousness.

Instead, they are spontaneously projected outward onto other human beings, social classes, institutions, and countries--onto any 'object' that is perceived as other and different from the self. No man can evolve his consciousness without first becoming aware of and retracting these projections and learning to comfortably accept them as his own dark potentialities.

It is not simply of matter of leaving the instinctual man behind, but of learning to integrate the necessary if often unattractive instinctual and vital functions into consciousness before moving forward. Thus the process is one of refinement and accumulation and not one of elimination.

Only the first major step in a series (Emerson: "Every ultimate fact is only the first of a new series"), the confrontation with and integration of the 'shadow' is often a harrowing and precarious process. If man accepts this task without ample preparation, inner fortification, and secure sense of identity (which he nonetheless must be willing to forgo), he may come to despise himself, lose all motivation, become morally degenerate, or commit suicide.

But if he does not recognize, accept and take up his own cross, he will blame, and attempt to injure or destroy, other people, classes, races, or countries to eradicate the sense of indefinable angst, doubt, suspicion, and fear that impinges itself so relentlessly upon his psyche; as Jung perfectly expressed it, he will endlessly attempt to free himself of "that thing that thrusts itself tyrannically upon him in the stillness and loneliness of the night."

Only after man has accepted and integrated his 'shadow' can he, 'reborn,' proceed rightfully ahead. It is this slow process ('make haste slowly' was another motto of the alchemists) of prudent illumination towards conscious realization of the "whole man," or "self," as Jung called it, that the alchemists referred to as "the great work," the highest single achievement of which man is capable.

Thus, though the alchemists apparently sought to turn base metal into gold, "gold" was in truth a simple metaphor for successfully integrated consciousness. Clearly, most of mankind, finding the burden of unconsciousness easier to bear than the burden of conscious realization and responsibility, regrettably and understandably fails in even this initial step.

As a result, man lives in a predominantly fallen world of near-animal existence.

'The Psychology of the Transference' is one of the most concise and digestible books in Jung's oeuvre; its insights and wisdom are readily applicable to life in the 21st century. As in the balance of his previous eighteen titles, Jung presents the world as an incredible place of breathtaking depth, mystery, and meaning, most of which is lost on the average man, who typically lives in a state of permanent hibernation from objective reality.

However, Jung's worldview is also one in which nature is infinitely strange and capable of continuous unexpected manifestations, unique hybrid creations, and monsters, simply because the process of psychic evolution is not only something man must willingly confront, but because it is a process which nature inexorably demands.

It is to Jung's credit that with 'The Psychology of the Transference' he is able to present his ideas in direct, palatable, and useful fashion without dilution.

A world of readers are blindly searching for this book, and turning instead to authors like Herman Hesse and Carlos Casteneda, 'New Age' crank authors whose work is merely plagiarism of Jung, or lesser psychologists who offer up Jung's ideas in vastly diluted form. 'The Psychology of the Transference,' a deep and hopeful book, is the source to which questing readers should turn.

Alchemy and the Psychology of Inner Redemption
By Michael P. McGarry
Yes, "transference" was originally Freud's term, but Jung's use in this 1946 essay is expanded far beyond what Freud (or anyone practicing psychology today) could possibly recognize. For Jung, transference was about a person's relation with his or her Unconscious, and the spectrum of possible relationships extends from delusion to liberating insight. Thus, transference is not just about the patient's relationship to the therapist; rather, transference is ultimately about the individual's relationship with the whole of life. After an introductory section, Jung frames his essay as a commentary on the *Rosarium Philosophorum*, an alchemical text published in 1550. The text focuses on a series of ten drawings that will assuredly appear bizarre to folks unfamiliar with alchemical symbols; however, Jung's brilliant analysis demonstrates that these apparently monstrous images actually map out, symbolically, that path to inner liberation. Indeed, this essay, late in Jung's career, represents him at the height of his powers, synthesizing symbols from a variety of sources to create a text dense with insights into the fundamental problems of human life.
