Reclusive movie star Jessica Lessing is finally coming out of hiding—to confront her father, a con man who has been selling her out to the paparazzi for years. On her four-day road trip to Las Vegas, she encounters three unexpected allies—Vivian, a teenager with newborn twins; Lynn, a dog shelter owner living in isolation on a ranch in rural Nevada; and Dana, a fearless ex-military bodyguard wrestling with secrets of her own. As their fates collide, each woman will find a chance at redemption that she never would have thought possible. MacKenzie Bezos’s taut prose, tough characters, and nuanced insights give this novel a complexity that few thrillers can match.

This is the story of four women in distress. Dana is a high-tech security guard who discovers she is pregnant. The father is quite possibly dying of cancer. Vivian has twins, doesn’t know who the father is, and is living with a man who is using her to entertain his business associates. Lynn, a recovering alcoholic with one hand, runs a dog shelter on her farm. Jessica—movie star, mother of two, and budding agoraphobic—is burdened with a father who sells information about her on the Internet. Gradually, we discover that Dana is guarding Jessica, and Vivian applies for a job at Lynn’s dog farm. By the end of the book, all four of them have come together and eased one another’s distress. Bezos deftly weaves these disparate stories together and creates a moving tale of redemption. Some of the traps release a little too easily, but the characters are involving and the pacing so right that it doesn’t matter. --Elizabeth Dickie
Review
“Taut but nuanced, a character-driven thriller that is both suspenseful and intelligent.” —Vogue
“Bezos writes spare, present-tense prose that lends her writing an urgency as four women slip in and out of psychic and emotional peril.” —The New York Times Book Review
“Sweet are the uses of adversity, writes Shakespeare, and MacKenzie Bezos explores that proposition. . . . Her characters are beautifully delineated and arrestingly original.” —Geraldine Brooks
“Traps is a page turner. . . . A remarkable kind of alchemy. . . . I didn't want it to end.” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone
“Cleverly orchestrated. . . . Each woman is impressively rendered.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Bezos galvanizes the mundane with a sense of dread, presenting four women trapped by sad circumstances and their own fallibility. . . . Bezos creates a sad, melancholic, nearly melodramatic world, almost too hard to stomach until we begin to see what she sees: “Life is full of things that feel like traps. . . . Sometimes later we see that they led us where we needed to go.’” —Publishers Weekly“The story of four women in distress. . . . Bezos deftly weaves these disparate stories together and creates a moving tale of redemption.” —Booklist

I Wanted to Like This But . . .
By Whidbey Mary
I really wanted to like this book for fear if I didn't my Prime and Vine memberships would be rescinded.
It took me days just to get to page 50. The overly detailed descriptions were off-putting as mentioned by another reviewer (Eric) as was the distant narration. This style of writing is not a style that grabs me and holds my attention. I find it difficult to warm up to and it seems to separate me from the characters - the opposite if what it is intended to do, I'm sure. Because of this I could neither connect with nor care about the 4 women therefore simply could not finish the book. I gave it 2 rather than 1 star because I feel Ms. Bezos has talent and I will give another book of hers a try. I think this one was written in a style that conveyed each of the women's lives, problems, and secrets, but not in a manner that worked for me.

A plus is that it isn't a long book
By sanoe.net
MacKenzie Bezos's "Traps" is a slim novel about 4 different women that takes place over 4 days that is meant to show we can be 'trapped' by various elements in our life be it emotional, circumstantial, good or bad.
Dana is the security expert who can't commit to a great guy. Jesica is an famous actress who has a troubled relationship with her estranged father. Vivian is a single mother and 17 year old prostitute. Lynn is a recovering alcoholic.
Of the 4, I "liked" Lynn the most but overall, the stories seemed very stock and not particularly illuminating. It was generic in its melodrama and simplified in its ending.
That said, it isn't a long book. Bezos doesn't let her characters overstay their welcome and that's actually a plus because I didn't feel like I wasted my time on a drawn out melodrama so the generic quality was balanced out.
It isn't a bad read but it isn't a great one either.

"Life is full of things that feel like traps"
By Freckles
The blurb says..."Four women, four days, one chance" and that pretty much sums this story well.
All four women are interesting characters. Dana is an ex military bodyguard, well trained, hard exterior and well disciplined. Jessica is a famous actress and has all the trappings that fame brings. Some of them are not very desirable. The loss of a private life and the endless fans and hangers on don't sit well with her and Jessica and her family have continuous protection, but this makes her a virtual hostage in her own home. Vivian is a a young woman who has had a rough time of it. At seventeen years old she is the mother of twins and running scared from a sinister boyfriend. Then there is Lynn, a recovering alcoholic, who runs a dog sanctuary. She carries a lot of guilt for her past mistakes, but has been clean from alcohol for over four years. More than anything she wants to make amends for how she let her family and friends down.
All these characters come together in an engrossing novel which I found to be a real page turner. I was eager to see how everything panned out and loved all the women for their faults and honesty. Neatly tied together, the story is great and highly recommended. I am now going to get hold of Mackenzie Bezos's first novel!
