Thomas Müller-Marqués Berger (Stuttgart, Germany) is a partner at Ernst & Young GmbH and currently serves as the firm's Global Leader of International Public Sector Accounting.
Thomas has been a member of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB) since January 2009, with his term recently being renewed until the end of 2014. Before joining the IPSASB, he was a member of the IFAC Public Sector Steering Committee on Social Policy Obligations, a subgroup of the IPSASB, during 2003 and 2004.
He has also been a member of the FEE Public Sector Committee (European Federation of Chartered Accountants) since 2003, and was appointed Chair in January 2012. At a national level, he has been a member of the German Public Sector Committee at the German Institute of Chartered Accountants (Institut der Wirtschaftsprüfer in Deutschland (IDW)) for almost 10 years.

Depending of your current level of knowledge it might be recommended...

It is a little less meaty than I would have liked - mind you it is called a SUMMARY.
I think it might be better for someone who is not familiar with IPSAS (or indeed accruals accounting). If you need to learn these things it is likely your employer (my employer has produced lots of information) or accounting body (e.g. CIPFA) would have something more appropriate or just go straight to the standard setting bodies.

However if you are looking for a fairly easy read or are completely new to IPSAS (even a non-accountant) it is recommended - perhaps not at full price though.

Great Companion for the Broadcast Journalist

Most journalists would be familiar with the Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, better known as the "AP Stylebook". Well, this is the broadcast version.
The back half of this book will look very familiar to those of us who have seen the stylebook, but the front half is all new, giving good tips on how to write good broadcast stories. As a broadcast journalism student myself, I would especially recommend this for broadcast journalism students, it will REALLY help you out.

As a broadcaster with American Forces Network in both Italy and Afghanistan, this handbook has been extremely valuable as a professional reference as well as highly informative. Really useful for anyone going into the business. It has a section that you can read to learn about basic info and a section like the AP book but for broadcasting, which does have different writing rules than print writing. I bought mine and am keeping it as a reference book. It's a good size and neatly organized it!

Excellent Book, Highly Recommended

This book covers a broad range of contemporary financial markets in less than 400 pages. The author states upfront that he has taught courses on this subject for years, and it really shows. His explanations are crystal clear, and the markets are presented in a very logical order and from a global prespective. In addition, the text is filled with many examples and case studies that really aid in understanding. There are plenty of formulas in this book, but the level of mathematical sophisticiation never goes beyond algbra.

Downsides? A bit dated and -- for the American reader -- written in British English with many of the examples in sterling. Personally, I felt this gave the book a more global flavor (or flavour) which seemed fitting given the topic.

A last note, Amazon has the page count wrong. Even with glossary, this book is less than 450 pages.

Strongly recommended for anyone interested in global finance either with an eye towards trading financial instruments or just to better understanded the complicated underpinnings of the modern global financial system.

One of the best introductions to this subject

This book is one of the best introductions to an area that grows in complexity.
It explains the various types of equities and how they are used. It covers the mathematical aspect of equities that even a non-mathematician would find absorbing, although and I hate to say this, mathematical purists would not find it rigourous enough.
This book goes a long way to demystifying an increasingly important part of world finance.
A good read for both investors and laymen alike.

This is an excellent comprehensive introduction to capital markets. It is very clearly written with a lot of practical examples and case studies. I particularly like the fact that the book covers a wide range of debt and equity cash and derivative products. It is less mathematical than a book like Hull and a very good complement to it.

Interest in world poetry drew me to this overview of Arabic poetry from medieval to contemporary. I'm greatly impressed with background info on Arabic culture and outlook on life. How many Arabs today associate the words "new" and "innovate" with evil?

Stunningly Relevant

If I were teaching a class in contemporary American poetics, I would require every student to own and study a copy of this book. There is nothing Adonis says about Arabic poetics across the centuries that cannot be transferred to the history of thought about English poetry. I was stunned by the relevance of his comments to my own experience of English poetry since the 7th century, right down to the various ideas that have contended with each other throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. Add to that the fact that he is both systematic and eloquent and you have a keeper for your library, to sit on the shelf next to Aristotle, Horace, Longinus, Sidney, Coleridge/Wordsworth, and all the rest.
