a concise collection of truly useful advice, complete with concrete recommendations

I like the six stages that Meyer identifies in learning the language. I immediately identified myself with her description of an "Upper Beginner", and found the corresponding list of suggested materials helpful for my current learning situation.

I also like the "Potential reward" suggestions at the end of each level. They're like an unexpected dessert at the end of a tough day, but could also be great for setting up external motivation for yourself at the beginning of a language learning push.

Finally, I appreciate her advice on how to use textbooks. I find that many people do not know how to use a textbook for self-study, perhaps because they've always been guided through them by teachers. I have found myself naturally exploring and figuring out my own way to use my textbooks, and my resulting method comes pretty close to what Meyer recommends. [Essentially, you should pay attention to what's happening in your mind and do whatever you feel you need in order to cement the new word or grammar concept.]

Overall this is a handy guide for Mandarin learners at any level. It's a concise collection of truly useful advice, complete with concrete recommendations for all sorts of language learning resources.

This is a great source of links, tips and tricks, learning material etc. Judith is a real polyglot. She`s fluent in more than 10 langauges, among them Mandarin. So...she knows a thing or two about studying languages. Get her booklet and follow her advice! It will certainly speed up the process of becoming fluent in Chinese!

Great Introduction to DHMLX

I was very happy to see a book about DHTMLX. As far as I know, this is the first book about this JavaScript framework. It is aimed at beginners and gives you a good taste what the framework is capable of. The book is well structured and written well. It is easy to follow the instructions. I would definitely recommend it over the official documentation, which can be really confusing and frustrating from time to time. However, the DHMTMLX folks are really dedicated to help if you need it. I hope this book will help to spread DHTMLX, because I believe it is deserved to be used more widely.
Unfortunately, the book does not follow the officially recommended directory structure. That can be confusing for beginners. However, if you can get over that, the website structure is very logical. The book introduces the reader to the most common components of DHTMLX. It does a very good job explaining the various methods and events of each component without overwhelming. All in all, the book is a great introduction to DHTMLX.
The only sore point I have about the book is the use of HTML5's local storage. I think the author/publisher chose the easy way out of using local storage instead of a "real" sql database. Because of this, one crucial part of DHTMLX is missing, which is server side functionality. I believe that the majority of potential users of DHTMLX have a proper sql database. The connector files add a lot of functionality to DHTMLX that changes methods in many components of the framework (server-side sorting filtering etc.). I hope the next edition will include this as well.

Excellent Introduction to DHTMLX Suite

Eli Geske has written an excellent introduction to the DHTMLX Suite. The writing is clear, specific, and easy to read, and the exercises are easy to follow. I didn't find any bugs in his code. I think that the documentation from DHTMLX can be daunting to even experienced programmers, so this book can really help you to learn how to think and code using the DHTMLX framework. If you take the time to type-in and test each exercise progressively and not just cut and paste them in, you will definitely have a big jumpstart in using DHTMLX.

My only quibble with the book is that it did not give any examples of using data from a server-side database, but that really shouldn't be very difficult for people familiar with JavaScript and JSON to figure out.

You will definitely need some familiarity with JavaScript and JSON to get the most out of this book, however, if you take the time to do all the exercises for building the application and pay attention to the patterns, you'll get a good idea about how JavaScript works.

About the Author
John William Polidori (1795-1821) was an English writer and physician. He is credited as one of the creators of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction and is also known for his associations with the Romantic movement. "The Vampyre: A Tale" was the first vampire novel published in English(the first notable appearance of a vampire in creative literature being the short German poem "Der Vampir," written in 1748, by Heinrich August Ossenfelder). In the summer of 1816, Lord Byron and his guests, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin (Shelley) and her half sister Claire Clermont, and Dr. John William Polidori, then Lord Byron's traveling physician, were staying at the Villa Diodati, by Lake Geneva, Switzerland. The group decided to have a friendly competition to see who could write the best horror story. It was the genesis of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and of Polidori's "The Vampyre: A Tale.""

One of the first road trips

A young man Aubrey is coming of age and tags along with Lord Ruthven, his friend and mentor, across Europe. Aubrey is enamored with Lord Ruthven sophisticated ways until his guardians point out that Lord Ruthven is depraved. Now he sees Ruthven in a new light an disides to strike out on his own.

While in Greece he is informed of vampires. Not really believing in them he realizes that their description matches Lord Ruthven.

He is in for a shocker however I will not go through the whole story as you will be fascinated to read it as it unfolded.

I came to this book through the back door. After watching a movie "The Vampire's Ghost" (1945) I found the main character Webb Fallon loosely based on Lord Ruthven. So I had to read the book

About the Author

Ron Marasco began his airline career in 1956 as a flight engineer with Pan Am. From the beginning of the 747 operation until 1984, he held senior positions, including vice president of maintenance and engineering associated with all phases of 747 maintenance. After leaving Pan Am, he continued his involvement as senior vice president of operations for Flying Tigers and was the operations executive who spearheaded the start-up and FAA certification of Atlas Air and Polar Air Cargo, all of which had 747 cargo fleets.

He received the Air Transportation Association’s prestigious Nuts and Bolts Award for outstanding professional leadership and management skills in airline maintenance and engineering spanning a career of forty years, and in celebration of his pioneering work in introducing the 747, into commercial service.

He currently is a Pan Am Historical Foundation board member and lives with his wife, Barbara, in East Hampton, New York.

A must read for all who love aviation, and all those who confront problems head on and cure them with brains & teamwork!!!

Great read about multiple problems surrounding the introduction of the "magnificent" B747 aircraft into commercial airline service, commencing in January, 1970. The author, Ron Marasco was indeed the "Pan Am" point man from the start that headed and directed the selected Pan Am team of maintenance technicians chosen to aid the introduction of the B747 into Pan Am passenger service. But......this story reaches out much further then the small band of these Pan Am folk. This is a story about technical problems overcome by scores of dedicated people, men & women from the Boeing Aircraft Company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines, Pan American World Airways and all the initial B747 aircraft operators across the world!!!! Thanks to the airmen, the maintenance crews, the engineering folks, the production line personnel at Boeing & P&W that worked so hard to deliver to the world traveling public, the safest aircraft ever built, "The Queen of the Skies"...the B747. This is truly a "human" story worth telling to all in the aviation community, and beyond, as to what teamwork, hard work, dedication, brotherhood, capable leadership can do when focused and motivated to completing the mission!!! Read it...IMHO, there is much to learned from all angles!!! John Lewis Arcari

More credit should go to the operational crews and related matintenance personal who had to operate under diffficult saituations

Most interesting awesome especially since the airlines went from the 220 seat 707 to the giant 464 seat 747.
The 747 was the first commercial airplane that went into service without first going through military air force experiences to take some of the bugs out. Much of the 747 problems were that caused by various engine difficulties that took time and expense to correct and caused multiple engine failures on a few flights. It appears to me the writer was lenient in reporting operational problems and high costs associated. More should have been written as to the stress and operational situations crews had to operate under. Don't like that a computer replaced the Flight Engineer.

an excellent little book

The author discusses many types of tetras in great detail, though more information on finding tank-mates for semi-aggressive tetras
such as the Serpae Tetra would be appreciated in this book. I enjoy reading this, and for the price, it's an excellent purchase. Steve Challis's book of facts is useful and fun. If you like tetras----- I think you'll enjoy this!

Excellent book on tetras

Quite a bit of useful information packed in a small, book. I was expecting to be disappointed because of the price, and I am actually quite impressed. If you have any interest in tetras or keep any as pets, this is an excellent value. I am not wasting a lot of time wading through fluff, it gets right to the useful stuff.

Fluff without much meat

I checked this book out from the library to see if it would be a good reference book for kids that are interested in learning how to use/program EV3 Robots. The first 100 pages (of ~350 pages) are dedicated to talking about what's in the box, comparing EV3 and NXT, and building your first bots. However, there isn't one single instruction on how to program or build an actual bot (even though there are 20 pages dedicated to building your first bots!)! It isn't until about page 150 (almost halfway through the book!) that you start learning how to program something. 150 pages to slog through before you start learning how to program something. The book directs you to a website for instructions on how to build your first bot (why do I need this book...???). There is some decent info and some decent examples about how to program, but then I got to the part about how to control the bot with the infrared remote. The example uses nested IF switch blocks to program the buttons to control the robot. What...??? Oh wait, the book says, "it seems like there should be a better way to get this program to work. Don't worry, there is...". "Whew", I think to myself, they are going to show you how to easily use a switch block in measure mode (infrared > measure > remote) to program actions for each of the remote buttons when you press them (super easy way to do it, by the way). But NO, it continues, "...Use a multi-threaded remote program." "Oh, no!", I think to myself, "Are they going to ...???" Yes they do. They show you how to use multiple start blocks, each with a wait block (waiting for a button on the remote to be pressed), to program the robot's motors for movement. NOOOOO!!!! OK, some might be thinking, "What's wrong with that?" Yes, the program probably works just fine and demonstrates that you can use multiple start blocks to multithread. However, this is a very bad practice. Trying to control and/or access any sensor and/or motor from more than one thread can cause issues and produce undesired results. I know, I tried it a lot when I was first learning and stuff didn't always work as desired. I then did some research and found out that yes, you could do it, but no, it's not a good idea and could cause undesirable results. So, I've found other ways to multithread my programs. I kind of gave up hope for this book after these examples.

I was hoping that this might be another good resource for kids to use, however, I cannot recommend it. There's too much fluff, too much talking about the different models you can build and just showing you pictures of them. You don't need a book for that, you can find all of that online for free. All you need is a little section to point this out and then move on to good stuff, but the book is lacking in "good stuff" as well. There are some OK examples, but some of the examples are just not good (see above). There are't really many building instructions in it either (like most of the other books I've looked at have), I think there are two and they are pretty basic. Rather than get this book, you're better off using Google to find sites to learn stuff from. Or, if you want a book, my favorite is The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book (Full Color): A Beginner's Guide to Building and Programming Robots.

Sorry, too much fluff and not enough meat (and some not so good meat too). Two stars for the effort.
