To have a reason to get up in the morning, it is necessary to possess a guiding principle. A belief of some kind. A bumper sticker, if you will. People in cars on busy freeways call to each other Boycott Grapes, comfort each other Honk if You Love Jesus, joke with each other Be Kind to Animals—Kiss a Beaver. They identify, they summarize, they antagonize with statements of faith: I Have a Dream, Too—Law and Order; Jesus Saves at Chicago Fed; Rod McKuen for President.

Lying on his back in bed, he gazes around the walls of his room, musing about what has happened to his collection of statements. They had been discreetly mounted on cardboard, and fastened up with push pins so as not to deface the walls. Gone now. Probably tossed out with the rest of the junk—all those eight-by-ten colorprints of the Cubs, White Sox, and Bears, junior-high mementos. Too bad. It would be comforting to have something to look up to. Instead, the walls are bare. They have been freshly painted. Pale blue. An  anxious color. Anxiety is blue; failure, gray. He knows those shades. He told Crawford they would be back to sit on the end of his bed, paralyzing him, shaming him, but Crawford was not impressed. Lay off. Quit riding yourself. Less pressure more humor go with the stuff that makes you laugh.

Right, of course. Right again. Always right: the thing that is missing here is a Sense of Humor. Life Is a Goddamn Serious Big Deal—he should have that printed up to put on his bumper—if he had a bumper, which he doesn’t, not Conrad Jarrett the Anxious Failure dress this guy in blue and gray. A thousand-word book report due Wednesday in English Lit. The book has not been read. A test over the first six chapters in U.S. history. A surprise quiz in trig, long overdue.

He rolls onto his stomach, pulling the pillow tight around his head, blocking out the sharp arrows of sun that pierce through the window. Morning is not a good time for him. Too many details crowd his mind. Brush his teeth first? Wash his face? What pants should he wear? What shirt? The small seed of despair cracks open and sends experimental tendrils upward to the fragile skin of calm holding him together. Are You on the Right Road?

Crawford had tried to prepare him for this. “It’s all right, Con, to feel anxious. Allow yourself a couple of bad days, now and then, will you?”

Sure. How bad? Razor-blade bad? He wanted to ask but he hadn’t, because at that point his suitcase was packed and his father already on the way to pick him up and remarks like that only got you into trouble, pissed people off. Cancel the visa. Passport Revoked: they stamp it in red across your forehead. Uh uh. He’d had enough of that place. In the last months he had been able to spot the permanent residents every time.  That unmistakable shuffling shoulders-bent walk. Mostly old men but some younger ones, too, in the dull, dusty-maroon bathrobes, sides flapping loosely, like the drooped wings of dying birds. Never. It was too damn small a world. Except that you always knew where you were. Mornings you talked first, then had O.T.—macramé, painting, woodworking, clay. Afternoons you could take a nap, go for a walk, work out in the gym—a well-equipped, exclusive YMCA—basketball, handball, racquetball, you name it. Evenings there were card games, small get-togethers in the corners of the lounge, Scrabble, backgammon. Leo told him once, “Stop worrying. You’re okay. You can play Scrabble, that means you can concentrate. You’re ready.” He had laughed. “It means you can spell,” he said. “That doesn’t mean shit.” “Well,” Leo said, “it’s nice to be good at something.”

His father calls to him from the other end of the house. He thrashes to a sitting position, connected at once to sanity and order, calling back: “Yeah! I’m up!” and, miraculously, he is up and in the bathroom, taking a leak, washing his hands and face, brushing his teeth. Keep moving, keep busy, everything will fall into place, it always does.

He takes a quick look in the mirror. The news isn’t good. His face, chalk-white, is plagued with a weird, constantly erupting rash. This is not acne, they assured him. What it was, they were never able to discover. Typical. He tries to be patient as he waits for his hair to grow out. He had hacked it up badly, cutting it himself the week before he left. (“I didn’t think they would let you have scissors,” his grandmother said to him. “They shouldn’t have,” he answered her, oh so casual, thereby relieving the listeners of shock and embarrassment while exhibiting his poise, his Sense of Humor, see  folks? Everything’s okay, he’s here, wearing his Levi’s, boots, and jersey shirt, just like everybody else, all cured, nobody panic.

This house. Too big for three people. Straining, he can barely hear the early-morning sounds of his father and mother organizing things, synchronizing schedules at the other end of the hall. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need to hear, and they would certainly not be talking about anything. important. They would not be talking, for instance, about him. They are people of good taste. They do not discuss a problem in the presence of the problem. And, besides, there is no problem. There is just Phase Two. Recovery. A moving forward.

From what? Toward what? He dresses himself (Progress!), looking out of the window, studying the lacy line of Russian olives that separates their property from the next-door neighbors’—what’s their name? Nice couple, but no kids, they’ve lived there for years—dammit, dammit, that’s the kind of stuff that scares you, not being able to remember names. He stares in concentration at the tall hedge of cedars hiding the house from the road. Cahill. Their name is Cahill. Okay, now relax.

But he cannot relax, because today is a Target Date. Tuesday, September 30. One month, to the day, that he has been home. And what are you doing Jarrett? Asking weird questions like From what? Toward what?  Questions without answers. Undermining. A serious affliction. Worse than acne, worse, even, than an unidentifiable rash. So what the hell kind of cure was that? In the rec hall one night they.showed a movie on insects, The Something Chronicle. Hellstrom, that was it. The May fly has a life-span of eighteen hours. It spends that entire time laying eggs for the next generation. May flies, the narrator explained, know the answer.  Because they never even have to ask the question. Nice for the May Hies.

There is a prickly sensation at the back of his throat. He turns away from the window, picking up his books from the desk. Then he puts them down again. No. Follow routines. First, the bed; then line up the towels in the bathroom; then pick up books; then eat break-Cast; then go to school. Get the motions right. Motives will follow. That is Faith. Vainly, he has taken to reading bumper stickers again, but they belong to other people. They are not his statements. I Am a Hockey Nut. Christ Is the Answer—What Was the Question?

Vaguely he can recall.a sense of calm, of peace, that he had laid claim to on leaving the hospital. There were one or two guiding principles to get him through the day. Some ambitious plans, also, for putting his life in order. But the details have somehow been lost. If there ever were any.

2

Razor in hand, he stands before the rectangular, gold-trimmed mirror, offering up a brief prayer: Thanks. Appreciate all you’ve done so far. Keep up the good  work, while, beside him, his wife brushes her hair. Her face is soft in the morning, flushed, slightly rounded, younger than her thirty-nine years. Her stomach is flat, almost as if she never had the babies. She raises her hands to the back of her neck, pinning her hair into a neat coil at the back of her head. Beautiful hair, the color of maple sugar. Or honey. Natural, too. The blue silk robe outlines her slender hips, her breasts.

“Did you call him?”

“Yeah, he’s up.”

She sighs. “I hate to play golf when it’s cold. Why doesn’t anybody in this league know enough to quit when the season’s over? Leaves on all the fairways, your hands freeze—it’s ridiculous.”

He leans toward her; gives her a kiss on the neck. “I love you.”

“I love you.” She is looking at him in the mirror. “Will you talk to him this morning? About the clothes. He’s got a closetful of decent things and he goes off every day looking like a bum, Cal.”

“That’s the style. Decency is out, chaos is in—” As her brows lift, he nods. “Okay, I’ll talk to him.”

“And the other thing, too.”

“What other thing?”

“Stopping by Lazenbys’ on the way home. Carole called again last week. It’s such a little thing....”

“I don’t want to pressure him about that. He’ll do it when he wants to. Carole understands.”

She shrugs. “When people take an interest, it would seem courteous—”

“We all know he’s courteous.” He turns his attention to his beard. Every morning the same face, the same thoughts. A good time to take stock, though. Calvin Jarrett, forty-one, U.S. citizen, tax attorney, husband, father. Orphaned at the age of eleven. He has caught himself thinking about that lately, thinking of the Evangelical Home for Orphans and Old People, an H-shaped, red brick building on Detroit’s northwest side, where he grew up. Wondering if after all these years it is still in existence. Strange that he has never bothered to check. An odd kind of orphanage: most of the kids had at least one living parent; some even had two. He had moved there when he was four, leaving the tiny apartment where he was born. His mother sent him gifts on his birthday, and at Christmas. Occasionally she visited him. Periodically she explained why he was living there, and not with her: there was no room for him in the apartment, no money; it was no neighborhood in which to bring up kids. She had a friend who knew people that were connected with the Home; just luck. The director had told him once that the Home was  financed by “religious benefactors.”

He was named Calvin, for his dead uncle; Jarrett had been his mother’s maiden name. When she came to see him, she came alone. No one claiming to be his father had ever been in attendance; he had no memories of being any man’s son. So, if anyone should ask, he can always point out that he had no example to follow.

And what is fatherhood anyway? Talking to a kid about his clothes. Not applying pressure. Looking for signs. He knows what to look for now: loss of appetite, sleeplessness, poor school performance—all negative, so far. His son eats, he sleeps, he does his homework. He says he’s happy. Another duty: asking silly questions. Are you happy? He has to ask, though; pretends that he is kidding, just kidding; Conrad replies in kind. Pointless. Would the answer have been any different, even if he had thought to ask, before? Good manners have nothing to do with communication, he must remember that. And being a father is more than trusting to luck. That, too. Nobody’s role is simple, these days. Not even a kid’s. It used to mean minding your manners, respecting those who were bigger than you, treating each day as a surprise package, waiting to be opened. Not any more. So what’s changed? Not enough surprises? Too many, maybe.

He has had a vision all these months, of boys, with their heads next to stereo speakers feeding music into their ears, their long legs draped over chairs and sofas. Or their arms, stretched toward a basketball hoop in the side drive (he had sunk the posts in cement himself, when Conrad was eight, Jordan, nine; just after they bought the house). Where are all these kids? Joe Lazenby, Phil Truan, Don Genthe, Dick Van Buren—they are all seniors in high school this year. Is eighteen too old to play touch football on the lawn? Basketball in  the side drive? Is it girls? Studies? Since he has been home, Conrad has gone once to the movies. Alone. “Didn’t anybody else want to see it?” Cal had asked. “I don’t know,” he said. “I didn’t ask.”

Responsibility. That is fatherhood. You cannot afford to miss any signs, because that is how it happens: somebody holding too much inside, somebody else missing signs. That doctor in Evanston. Make sure he calls him. It is for his own good. Why? Because his own vision, that of the boys hanging around, isn’t coming true? It has only been a month. All the other signs seem right. Stay calm. Keep it light. Try not to lean. A balance must be struck between pressure and concern.

Back when Conrad was in the hospital, back when the visits were limited to twice a month, he could afford to take responsibility for everything: the sections of gray peeling paint in the stair wells; small gobs of dirt swept into the corners of the steps; even a scar at the side of one orderly’s mouth. Now that he is home again, things are different. The responsibilities seem enormous. Staggering. His job alone, nobody else’s. Motherhood is different, somehow. And what about fathering girls? He must ask Ray Hanley sometime, how it feels. Is there more, or less responsibility? He couldn’t take more. Your mother wants me to tell you, you have a closetful of decent clothes. He will smile. “Okay. You told me.” But, in a minute, he will ask, “What’s wrong with what I’ve got on?”

Nothing. Nothing I can see. Only I don’t pass up any chances to discharge these fatherly duties, this is the age of perfection, kid. Everybody try their emotional and mental and physical damndest.

Family, interrupted
By JLind555
Judith Guest wrote a remarkable book about an ordinary family's response to an extraordinary tragedy; it was so popular in its time precisely because the Jarretts could be any American family and what happened in their family could happen in anyone's family. Well, maybe not in anyone's family; most Americans aren't wealthy enough to live in a McMansion in an upper-middle-class bedroom community nor do most families own a boat; but income aside, the Jarretts are like most people one knows: a hardworking father, a mother who wants the best for her family, and two teenage sons, one outgoing and confident, the other quiet and retiring, living in his older brother's shadow. A freak boating accident leaves the older brother dead by drowning, and the family devastated. The parents, Cal and Beth, and their younger son Conrad, are left to cope with the aftermath. "Ordinary People" is the story of how they cope - or fail to.

When the story opens, Conrad has been referred to a psychotherapist following hospitalization for a suicide attempt, after his depression over his brother's death becomes more than he can deal with. Conrad is suspicious, withholding, resentful; he's out of the hospital and no longer deemed a threat to himself, so why should he talk to this guy? But the shrink seems okay, he doesn't push or pry; he'll let Conrad open up when he's ready. And gradually, Conrad opens up.

But the more Conrad opens up, the more his mother, Beth, retreats into the wall of denial she has built up around herself. Beth is by far the most fascinating character in this book; fundamentally insecure emotionally, she has reacted by creating a world in which all is perfection: she's the perfect wife and mother, the perfect hostess, presiding over the perfect home in the perfect suburban community. There's no room for mess or disorder in her world. Her older son's death broke her perfect world apart. But her younger son's suicide attempt trashed it. This woman is so self-centered that she takes his action as a personal affront; he did it to hurt her. And so Conrad not only has to work through the anguish of his brother's death, but also the pain of his mother's rejection.

Guest is a skilled writer and she makes her characters live and breathe; we see Conrad in all his anguish and adolescent awkwardness, working through pain and grief to realize that some things can't be explained or rationalized; they just are. Conrad's father, Cal, a self-made individual, is devastated by the family tragedy but strong enough to be there for Conrad when he needs him. It's Beth, whose uncompromising rigidity appears to hold her up through the immediate aftermath of the funeral, who will ultimately crack under her inability to let go and externalize her pain.

"Ordinary People" shows us how ordinary individuals and families can come undone by events beyond their control. One reads this book and comes away realizing that strength and weakness are not always what they appear to be. Sometimes the weaker are the stronger after all.

The Price of Perfection
By Gary F. Taylor
The Jarretts are the perfect family leading a perfect life in a perfect world: wealthy, respectable, an expensive house in an exclusive neighborhood, European vacations, Texas golf trips. But perfection comes at a price, and when older son Buck dies in a boating accident and surviving son Conrad attempts suicide the difference between the American dream and American reality becomes painfully apparent. The mask of perfection cracks, and those who hide behind it find themselves emotionally unable to rebuild their lives.
Judith Guest brings the reader into the story at the middle, shortly after son Conrad's release from the hospital--and with a somewhat sparse but remarkably eloquent style quickly develops the characters that people Conrad's world as he fights to find balance between his parents and himself, as he works desperately to find a way out of the expectation of perfection imposed upon him by both himself and the society in which he moves.
Guest's characters move with considerable reality and a touching humanity above the novel's unexpectedly complex underpinnings, and the author's prose is smooth, easy to read and understand, and completely faultless. Among the most astonishing elements of the work is the fact that Guest writes the entire novel in the present tense--a risky choice, but one which she brings off with amazing skill. A beautifully written novel and a powerful look at the downside of the American dream. Strongly recommended.

A Common Family with Uncommon Problems
By Lance Waidzunas
The characters in Ordinary People are faced with common, everyday problems. The lives of the Jarret family were turned inside-out after the death of Jordan, also known as Buck Jarret. Each character dealt with the pain and loneliness of losing Buck in a different way. However the one thing they all had in common was that the death of Buck completely destroyed everything they knew to be true, and influenced every aspect of their lives. Their grief and despair made it difficult for them to form new relationships or maintain ones they already had. Once Buck died, the family fell apart, and the complex relationships they each had with one another began to become corrupt and transformed them into less of a family and more of enemies. It seemed as if Buck was the joining force of the family and when he was gone the family lost cohesion. Cal, whose life revolved around making sure his family was content and satisfied found that he felt incompetent and lacking when he couldn't provide them with what they really needed: closure, happiness, a sense of complacency that no longer existed once Buck was gone. He spent most of his time wondering who he was, how he could define himself, and what he could possibly do to make everyone sane again. His constant obsession drove his wife crazy. A perfectionist, she had to have everything go smoothly. Buck's death not only put a wrinkle in her concept of the perfect family, it put a glitch in her social life. After Conrad is admitted to the mental institution for trying to commit suicide, she deals with it by taking trips and she falls into a spiral of denial. Conrad, of course, is hurt and offended by his mother's apparent apathy towards him. He finally realizes that he can't change his mother, and with this realization comes a sense of acceptance. Conrad, after he comes home, is faced with the task of being 'ordinary' again. He deals with his problems one at a time. He sees a psychiatrist and makes attempts at getting back his life. He is still unsure of himself and insecure, but by talking to his analyst, he slowly learns to be comfortable with who he is. His conflict is internal. He has trouble with the guilt of Buck's death, and is hurt by his mother's lack of concern. His finally is able to gain control of his life after he quits the swim team. By taking that decisive action, he took the reins into his own hands and took control. However he doesn't tell his family and Beth is mortified to hear the news from her friends. Beth is not concerned that he quit the team, merely with how it might look to others that she is unaware of her 'crazy' son's activities. Conrad finally snaps and accuses her of not caring. This is Conrad's turning point. He is able to express his emotions instead of bottling them up. Ironically, Conrad, the one most affected by Buck's death, comes to terms with it before his parents ever even acknowledge the fact that they are having problems. Conrad moves on, still grieving and still in pain, but stronger, and more in control. In my opinion, this book was quite enjoyable. It makes you think about how you would react if you lost someone you loved. It shows the true nature of ordinary people who are faced with tragedy. It's an intimate view of a family's battle with misfortune.

Weight Loss on Steroids - Lose a Belief, Lose Weight!
By Christine A. Waugh
Steroids? I'm not kidding you, weight loss on steroids is the only way I can describe my recent review of the book, Theta Healing Rhythm For Finding Your Perfect Weight by Vianna Stibal.

I get it!

It could be because I've spent the last four years learning to look at life through a whole new lens.

I've tossed out my age-old belief system that was a disservice to me, not to mention to my poor children also.
My somewhat "rotund" body has shed weight that now has me down to a manageable size where I look and feel like I'm in my pre-childbearing state, albeit with a few hefty stretch marks!

Don't stop reading now. You have to hear how Vianna has managed to take a simple spiritual approach to the emotional weight we all carry around with us.

We can't seem to shed the weight no matter what and we always give up.

The funny thing is, we never ever thank our Creator for giving us our Divine physical being, and we never think of praying for guidance to release the watershed of toxic thoughts and actions we've created within ourselves.
I just get a sense that Theta Healing Rhythm will change all that.

We know all the excuses for why we're overweight. Here are a few that I've taken the liberty to over-exaggerate from Vianna's original, beautiful examples in the book:

1. I'm overweight because my family is overweight.
2. I'm safe and protected, hiding my emotions (anger, jealousy, greed, etc.) behind my weight.
3. It's my genetics; those darn ancestors passing on the fat gene to me!
4. Pump that husband/wife up with food and they won't cheat on me!

Sound familiar?

Vianna's approach to releasing resentment mirrors many other belief system workshops that I've spent ions of money on since the beginning of time - well, not really, but it sure feels like it.

Even juicier in this book is her approach to blessing our body and our food, releasing layers (emotional and physical pollutants), and my favorite, exercises without exercising! It doesn't get any better than that.
Even though I love her process of exercises without exercising, I have to say that my favorite part of this book is her practice that releases sadness from deep within.

I can't even describe this exercise except to say that there were a lot of heavy-duty moans and groans coming from my house for a few hours. I'm sure my neighbor wasn't exactly happy with the scary sounds, but it worked very well for me, thank you!

I really wish I would've discovered Vianna's other books before reading this one.
Her earlier works, Advanced ThetaHealing, On the Wings of Prayer, TheTaHealing: Introducing an Extraordinary Energy-Healing Modality, ThetaHealing Diseases and Disorders would have given me a better insight into what to expect with this current Theta Healing research.

But, then again, the Divine never sends me what I need until I'm ready for it.

Nevertheless, it's a book for weight loss on steroids! I'm sticking to my description and I'm pumping up on exercising without exercising!

I send you my love, blessings and wishes for a prosperous and abundant life!

Excellent, Integrated Approach to Releasing Weight
By Andy Nieradko
Thetahealing Rhythm For Finding Your Perfect Weight by Vianna Stibal is an incredible book. It isn't for everybody, but if you have experience, or are interested in energy healing, this will be right up your alley. Being unfamiliar with the author's previous books, I was initially confused about what thetahealing entails. However, she cleared up my confusion pretty quickly. The integrated mind, body, spirit approach she offers is what sets this program apart from so many others. Her introduction contains the divine revelation "Anyone who tells you that you can release weight without exercise is trying to sell you something. You have to exercise!" The latter sections of the book deal with exercise and nutrition. But like all good teachers she starts by taking a deep look at the foundation of the issue. Beliefs. Those of us who have successfully lost extreme amounts of weight know, that the outward changes only mirror the effect of the inward changes. And those beliefs must change drastically. Vianna Stibal covers many of the limiting, dangerous beliefs in detail. That section alone makes this book a 5 star read. This is a fantastic book. The author sums it up best by saying, "This program is for those people who are intuitive;who realize that there is no separation between mind, body, and soul." Many of the ideas offered, are concepts I wish I'd have been exposed to years ago. There are empowering points she makes, that I've been trying to teach to my own personal training clients. The sections on running and exercising "without exercising" are brilliant. This book is a powerful tool, and is a definite keeper in my fitness library.
I received a free copy of this book from Hay House for review purposes, I was not financially compensated. This review reflects my honest opinion and assessment of this book.

Crime, Reason and History: A Critical Introduction to Criminal Law (Law in Context), by Alan Norrie

Crime, Reason and History provides an alternative approach to the study of the general principles of criminal law. It emphasises, in contrast to orthodox texts, the tensions and contradictions at the law's heart. The author outlines the themes of responsibility, rationality and justice which govern the orthodox criminal law text. He traces these to the early nineteenth century reform of the criminal law and notes conflicts within reform ideologies relating to the idea of the 'responsible individual'. He then takes the reader through the bulk of the criminal law's 'general part' showing how conflicts from reform ideology emerge within criminal law. An historical and political logic underlies its illogicalities, giving it its 'shape'. The author presents a sceptical critique of the liberal positivist tradition in criminal law scholarship, and a social analysis of both its practical necessity and intellectual impossibility. He shows how the ideology of individual legal justice was imposed as a means of excluding alternative political voices, while recognising its importance for the survival of the liberal polity.

Ramen no more!
By Robert Strauss
As someone who ate a lot of ramen in his 20s and 30s (while reading lots of money management and personal finance books and not applying what they suggested), I can say from personal experience that Jim Wood's book captures and effectively conveys what young people need to know about building wealth.

Wood combines solid, time-tested advice with an engaging style and personal anecdotes in an easy-to-read book. With the US economy stuck in the doldrums, the sooner anyone applies Wood's suggestions the better. Particularly useful are Wood's many ideas about how to find and use money that leaks out of pockets or is already lost in the couch. Few of them imply any significant lifestyle changes but all add up to big bucks over time. It's the kind of trade-off that everyone can afford. Wood's formula really boils down to "add a little discipline and watch your piggy bank fatten up." "From Ramen to Riches" would have been a lot more useful to me when I was in business school than most of the over-written, over-priced text books we were required to read.

Everyone needs to read this book
By P. OSullivan
I was skeptical that I would learn much from this book. I have a degree in economics and an MBA. I have invested conservatively over my lifetime and expected no surprises. Boy was I surprised.

There are three reasons to buy this book.
1. It is very readable. Because it is plain-written, non-financial readers will find this a very easy read. No big words or formulas, just straight talk.
2. The breadth of the topic. Woods gives you "The Big Picture" and then does a marvelous job of drilling down to how to buy a car, a house, invest, and manage your finances including credit cards.
3. Clarity of explanations. He provides powerful models that help you understand the concepts and the power of your decisions.

Finally, this book is not just for those of us who have money to invest - it is really for everyone including folks on a very small income trying to stretch every penny.

A tasty dish of well-seasoned advice...
By katherine willey
Saving $10 -- good. Spending $9.95 to buy this book -- better! As a senior banking officer, I have a pretty good concept of most things financial. However, when talking to young people about personal finance, including the two growing up in my house, I find myself either... A. At a loss for words, or, B. Putting out way too many words, and quickly losing my audience. Wood's book is genius. Complex concepts are made remarkably simple; the valuable lessons are cloaked in enough humor that they don't go down like lessons at all. Our family's gift closet is stocked with this book. Every high school and college graduate we care about will receive Wood's book. From Ramen to Riches is going to put a lot of people on the path to bright financial futures.
