Worst textbook I have ever been subjected to

First let me say that if you are in a nursing program that uses this textbook, I realize you don't have a choice in the matter and as such, book reviews are of limited utility. That said, I have to be honest and say that this text book is simply horrible. I survived my pediatric nursing course and got a good grade, but it was in spite of this torturous textbook, which I am pleased to now be able to say I will never have to look at again.
Yes, the textbook contains a tremendous wealth of accurate, raw information. But that's the problem also. It's RAW. The organization of the text is terrible, finding the relevant critical info you actually need is nearly impossible, and it is pure torture to try to read. The authors do not appear to understand the concepts of summarization, highlighting, and organization. Virtually every page is a monolithic wall of seemingly randomized, excessively verbose, dry text.
If you have to use this textbook, try to get as much as you can out of your lectures and whatever other learning materials are offered by your professors, because this text is mostly useless.

As a BSN student I really enjoy learning. I have done well in every class up until now and I believe that the text has a lot to do with it. Although I must admit that I have never been excited about pediatric nursing this book makes it even more difficult for me to get through the class. I have never felt like I have wasted so much time in my life reading a textbook. We are assigned a tremendous amount of reading material from this book and I know why, because for the amount of words that the author uses to get their point across very little is actually said and a lot of it seems to be opinion based. I am sorry but a lot of this book is common sense, "don't leave boiling water in a place where a toddler can reach..." The repetitiveness is what really gets to me though. In the nursing program as many of you know, time is critical and should not be wasted, yet the authors of this book feel it is necessary to repeat the same information and most of it is what I call "fluff." "When a toddler goes to the bathroom on their own make sure to provide emotional support..." They never tell you what emotional support means, but at least it sounds good, and to me is common sense. This seems like I may be splitting hairs here but this is only one of numerous examples that is evident throughout this book. The valuable information in this book is so diluted and I get so frustrated with the amount of reading necessary to get so little information. Although this book is a VERY comprehensive book and may be good as reference material, it does not seem to be written with students in mind. If you are an instructor looking for a valuable text that you want your students to benefit from I would look elsewhere.

Fantastic book for pediatric nurses!

This book is amazing. It was a required textbook for nursing school and one of the only books I ended up keeping after graduation. I refer to it all the time and find myself reading the whole chapter just because of how interesting the subject matter is and how well the book is written. If you are in your pediatric clinical rotation or if you have any interest in pediatric nursing I highly recommend this book!
