About the Author

Suzanne Ferriss is Professor of English at Nova Southeastern University. She has co-edited two volumes on the cultural study of fashion: On Fashion and Footnotes: On Shoes. She is also co-author of A Handbook of Literary Feminisms (Oxford University Press, 2002). Most recently, she co-edited Chick Lit: The New Woman’s Fiction (Routledge, 2006) with Mallory Young.

Mallory Young is Professor of English and French at Tarleton State University. She has published on a variety of topics, from the Odyssey to Texas women’s literature and, with Suzanne Ferriss, has co-authored several articles on chick culture. She and Ferriss co-edited Chick Lit: The New Woman’s Fiction (Routledge, 2006).

About the Author
Mitchel S. Berger M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S. is the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and is an expert in the fields of neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. He also serves as Director of UCSF’s Brain Tumor Research Center.

After graduating from Harvard University in 1974, Dr. Berger earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed a clinical fellowship in neuro-oncology at UCSF, a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children of the University of Toronto, and his neurosurgical residency at UCSF. In 1986, he became Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, after which he was named Associate Professor (1990) and Professor (1996).

Dr. Berger has clinical expertise in treating adult and pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors. He is a pioneer of intraoperative brain mapping - a technique used to avoid functional areas of the brain during surgical resection of a tumor. His work has enabled surgeons to perform more extensive resection of tumor with less chance of producing sensorimotor or language deficit.

Dr. Berger is a leader of translational research and is the Principal Investigator of the UCSF Brain Tumor Research Center’s Specialized Program of Research Excellence in neuro-oncology, funded by the National Cancer Institute. His specific research interests lie in identifying molecular markers related to the progression and prognosis of glial tumors, as well as the development of small-molecule therapeutic agents that can be administered directly to the brain via convection-enhanced drug delivery.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Berger has served as President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Society of Neuro-Oncology, President of the North Pacific Society of Neurology, and Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has also been a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is currently President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery.

In 2009, Dr. Berger was awarded the prestigious Winn Prize by the Society for Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as a member of the National Football League Head, Neck and Spine Committee, focusing on retired players’ issues and examining the consequences of repetitive head injury and concussion. He is also an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Organization for Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

A prolific author, Dr. Berger has contributed over 500 scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, has edited 6 textbooks, and has written over 80 chapters on various neurosurgical topics. He is currently on the editorial boards of several leading journals including Neuro-Oncology and Neurosurgery.

Exceptionally Clear

Each section is fairly bite-sized. Each section gives pretty clear detail on how/why a particular theorem holds. Each section has problems which illuminate the theorems in the related section. The overall balance of topics is clear. The text is nicely focused on the math for the sake of the math...not very applied. This slightly "pure" approach may be disconcerting for folks without "mathematical maturity". Usually that phrase is short hand for "fill in the blanks which the author did not", but in this case it simply means that you have to think of math within the domain of math, not as a tool to solve a particular applied problem.

This book is terrible! It provides too few examples and does not explain the subject matter in detail. The problems are difficult to solve simply by reading the book, which contains inadequate information and insight. Beginners will struggle without outside help such as a professor, teaching assistant, etc.
This is possibly one of the worst math books I have read and there is plenty of literature that can explain the same topics in a more clear, detailed manner with sufficient examples. Simply go to your local library.

There seemed to be a disconnect between this booklet and the Wiley Test Bank of questions (about 700 questions for Part 1). I thought the book gave a good overview but not nearly enough background in certain areas (sampling and computer assisted audit techniques). I found much more value in the online Wiley Test bank for preparing for the test. In summary, don't just rely on this book for your prep. Happy to say I passed Part 1 yesterday.

Excellent High Imperial Fiction

Kate Quinn pens an outstanding piece of historical Roman fiction with this outstanding novel. At times a historical romance and at others a first-century political thriller, "Mistress of Rome" is at its core a story of two parallel lives: Lepida Pollia, the spoiled daughter of an ascendant-aristocratic father and her slavegirl, Thea, one of the few survivors from the siege of the Jewish fortress at Masada.

Despite the two young women's differences in social standing, Thea is quickly vying with her mistress for the affections of the barbarian gladiator Arius, and infuriates the young patrician by her success with the fighter. Sold to appease Lepida's wrath, Thea embarks on a road that will take her down an even darker path than through the barracks of the arena, with the only key to her freedom lying in the hands of the emperor, Domitian. But Domitian has a dark side, and a woman from Thea's past envies her position at the emperor's side.

Clever weaving of historical fact, "facts" gleaned from ancient authorship, and original invention makes this a compelling read; historical inaccuracy is minimal and employed for story purposes rather than out of error. The Domitian-era setting was a refreshing one; this is one of the few high-imperial novels that I have come across.

Recommended for readers looking for character-driven plot and excellent development; the heroes and their supporting castmembers are endearing and sympathetic.

good but brutal...

I noticed many reviewers here on Amazon say that Mistress of Rome is a "fun" read. I wouldn't use the word fun. Gripping, yes, dramatic, yes, brutal and sad , yes. It's a good book but when you have a story where the two main characters are a 14 Year old slave (who is abused by her mistress and is forced to sleep with her master at 14) and the "hero" is a Gladiator who also has had a brutal life as a slave before being bought to become a gladiator-well, you are not going to get sunshine and rainbows. But you will get an honest portrayal of life in ancient Rome.

This is the debut of, whom I foresee, to be the next New York Times Bestselling author: Kate Quinn. Mistress of Rome is a fast-paced, emotionally charged, sensual exploration of life in Ancient Rome during the reign of Emperor Domitian. From the first page to the last the reader is instantly embroidered into a world of emotion, sensuality, and political intrigue.

The plot of this story centers around a slave girl, Thea, and her transgression through Roman life. Thea is last survivor of the siege of the Jewish fort of Masada in Israel. Lepida, Thea's mistress (owner), is one of those characters you love to hate. Lepida has a liking to three things: money, power, and men. Arius, is a gladiator (a very successful gladiator) who Lepida decides to target as her next play thing. One problem. Arius and Thea, fall in love. Lepida quickly finds out and sells Thea to a whore house, separating Thea and Arius.

Thea is pregnant and is to sold to a musician who trains her to sing and play the lyre. As her fame grows Thea catches the eye of the emperor. The emperor is intrigued by Athena, Thea's stage name, and deems her his mistress thus beginning her journey as The Mistress of Rome.

The characters in this book are so realistic. The whole way you feel their angst, their pain, and their lust. You grow to love them and some you grow to hate. In the first chapter of the book we find out that Thea cuts herself in order to escape the tragedy of her life through physical pain, every time she does it you want to be there with her to take the knife away and reassure her. When her and Arius get torn apart your heart aches for the separated lovers.

Speaking of lovers...Thea and Arius are amazingly compatible. Both were taken from their homeland to serve as slaves for the Roman empire. Both are damaged emotionally beyond all belief. Both are undeniably in love with the other. The best part of their romance was that it wasn't the run-of-the-mill romance. There were years when the two didn't even see, hear, speak of each other, they slept with other people, Thea sleeps with EMPEROR OF ROME, and yet still their love holds strong. Their romance is tragic, its believable, its heartbreaking, and its real. I was rooting for them all the way, even more than 2 millennia later.

The other two characters I have to mention are Lepida and Emperor Domitian. They will intrigue you, they'll make read over a page again for you to actually believe another human being would do/say what they just did. These two helped make this book one of my new favorites. Lepida and Domitian made Mistress of Rome a realistic possibility of Ancient Rome and not a unbelievable historical fantasy.

Kate Quinn wrote one of the best books I've read in a long time. I still find myself thinking about the characters and their lives now and then and I finished the book a month ago. An author that can compel readers to think about their book so long after wards is as amazing, if not more, than the book they wrote. Her characters were realistic, whether they be good or evil, they were real. Her plot was intriguing and gripping from page one to the final word. Her writing was flawless, with amazing descriptions of Ancient Rome you were transported to her world.

Who do I recommend this book to? Everyone. Even if your not a fan of historical romance you'll love this book. A warning though...it is graphic and there is adult content but its totally worth the read.

About the Author
Tony Hillerman (1925-2008) was an award-winning author and newspaperman, best known for his mystery novels set on the Navajo Nation.

Don Strel, a photographer, has been published in numerous books and magazines. He has taught art and design at the university level and has served as the director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of New Mexico. He is currently the director of the Southwest Assignments photography, design and public relations agency, which he founded in 1991.

Anne Hillerman is the founding director of Wordharvest Writers' Workshops, a journalist, and author whose books include Tony Hillerman's Landscape: On the Road with Chee and Leaphorn. She is Tony Hillerman's eldest daughter.

A must-have book

A long time ago in a state far away I purchased a small book that told larger-than-life stories. I read "The Great Taos Bank Robbery," then read it again. Author Tony Hillerman became one of my heroes at that point, and he remains so to this day. In the intervening years I have returned to that dog-eared book more times than I can count, especially when writing my own newspaper, wire service or TV stories and wishing I were writing them where Tony Hillerman did: the Land of Enchantment - New Mexico.
I collected First Edition copies of Tony Hillerman's books, but sadly, I never got to meet the man. I have met his vivacious daughter, Anne, however, and was delighted to learn that she and photographer-husband Don Strel were re-issuing "The Great Taos Bank Robbery" with added notes and pictures. The book came to my house yesterday, and I did not put it down until early this morning - once again held under the spell of Tony Hillerman's storytelling. Just in time, too, as my original copy was dropping its pages faster than I could tape them together.
I cannot urge you strongly enough - buy this book if you love good writing, the West, and a bunch of characters who make up "The Land of Enchantment."

The Great Taos Bank Robbery

This was Tony Hillerman at his best. It is a series of short stories about New Mexico and its people. Most are kind of "quirky" showing the amusing side of of western humor. The title story is about a Bank Robbery that actually didn't happen and how it became the folklore of a town. It is an amusing collection that will take no more than a couple of hours to read, but you will find yourself reading it over and over to find more of the hidden nuances of the town's residents.
