About the Author

Timothy J. Rupert

Timothy J. Rupert is a Professor and the Golemme Administrative Chair at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. He received his B.S. in Accounting and his Master of Taxation from the University of Akron. He also earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University. Professor Rupert’s research has been published in such journals as The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Advances in Taxation, Applied Cognitive Psychology, Advances in Accounting Education, and Journal of Accounting Education.

He currently is the co-editor of Advances in Accounting Education. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Massachusetts Society of CPAs. He also has received the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the D’Amore-McKim School’s Best Teacher of the Year award multiple times. He is active in the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association (ATA) and has served as president, vice president, and secretary of the ATA.

Thomas R. Pope

Thomas R. Pope is the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting at the University of Kentucky. He received a B.S. from the University of Louisville and an M.S. and D.B.A. in business administration from the University of Kentucky. He teaches international taxation, partnership and S corporation taxation, tax research and policy, and introductory taxation and has won outstanding teaching awards at the University, College, and School of Accountancy levels. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, the Tax Adviser, Taxes, Tax Notes, and a number of other journals. Professor Pope’s extensive professional experience includes eight years with Big Four accounting firms. Five of those years were with Ernst & Whinney (now part of Ernst & Young), including two years with their National Tax Department in Washington, D.C. He subsequently held the position of Senior Manager in charge of the Tax Department in Lexington, Kentucky. Professor Pope also has been a leader and speaker at professional tax conferences all over the United States and is active as a tax consultant.

Kenneth E. Anderson

Kenneth E. Anderson is the Pugh CPAs Professor of Accounting at the University of

Tennessee. He earned a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee and subsequently attained the level of tax manager with Arthur Young (now part of Ernst & Young). He then earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University. He teaches corporate taxation, partnership taxation, and tax strategy. Professor Anderson also is the Director of the Master of Accountancy Program. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, Advances in Taxation, the Journal of Accountancy, the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, and a number of other journals.

Would not recommend unless it's required for a class. This thing is almost painful to slog through, reading the actual tax codes is more interesting. Its most useful feature is that it has things organized by topic and then has from there an index of where everything is in 26 USC so you don't have to spend hours searching.

A must for all engineers

This book has almost everything you'll need to know in fluids, motors, steam and pipe. Most engineers add tables to augment it. If you are sizing pumps, selecting cables for motor starters or designing piping you must have this book.

Although this text retains a lot of tried and true rule of thumbs, it also has incorporated updates. Over the past 10 years I've watched proceeding generations of Cameron Hydraulic Data grow from a few paragraphs on PD pumps to a few pages. That's the other wonderful thing about this text: it retains its compact size. While Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook is really only a handbook if you're Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cameron has managed to balance knowledge with size.

If you're abandoning ship for a desert island --- take this book!

Sub-par Print Quality

My rating is only for this latest 19th version and not to the wonderful historical content of the reference.

All the information is still there but this version from FlowServe is extremely hard to read. This is most critical when trying to read the small print of table entries or charts. It's almost as if they photocopied the version from Ingersol Rand. Or printed it on a desk jet printer.

I ended up buying a late 17th edition (1992 printing) used for half the price and returning this one. Quality of I-R copy is superb. Sure, it doesn't have some of the new FS pump information, but I don't need that. The tables, charts and data are far more important to me.

Must Like Hegel & Lacan

I haven't finished this extremely short text yet. It was originally a small series of lectures. Basically, Butler critiques Hegel's and Lacan's appropriations of Antigone (both the play and, especially, the character) to represent a certain ideal. She summarizes rather lucidly both Hegel's and Lacan's positions. Of course, the problem with both Hegel and Lacan is that they are so dense and (often) obscure that, like Nietzsche, they get appropriated left and right themselves. So understanding what they *really* ever meant is always slippery. But Hegel and Lacan are familiar territory for Butler. She's no Classicist, and she's upfront about that. I think she does a phenomenal job highlighting the ultimately untenable postion(s) Hegel and, to a lesser extent, Lacan assume in relation to Antigone. I haven't finish yet, but Butler is certainly setting up her own "feminist" reading. It's not concerned with "what the Greeks thought" the way classical scholars (by definition) often are. Rather, she's clearly relating Greek tragedy to the modern world in response to the past 300 years of (post)enlightenment thinking. A more recent text that also deals with a lot of this material is The Antigone Complex by Cecilia Sjoholm - if you're interested.

Profound work on the legacy of Antigone

Antigone's revolt lives on! As Butler says herself in the introduction, she is not a classicist and has no desire to be one. This book is about the intellectual/artistic legacy of the figure of Antigone and the political and philosophical implications of her performative resistance to state power. Having taken a seminar in 1998 with Butler on the very topic of Antigone, I can assure you that the author is well aware of the ambiguity of Sophocles's play. As Butler demonstrates, this ambiguity is what has driven so many diverse interpretations by major thinkers such as Hegel and Lacan and playwrights like Hoelderlin and Brecht. Butler insightfully analyzes the critical-artistic tradition that has developed since Sophocles and helps to demonstrate this tradition's continued relevance in the present day--in any case where individual desire conflicts with the institution of the state as it functions to set the parameters of the normal or acceptable in society.

Judith Butler's study of Antigone, over the course of these 3 lectures, yields important and timely insights about how we might understand kinship and love in today's society. Her analysis of Hegel, Levi-Strauss, and Lacan is impressively rigorous. A must read for anyone interested in liguistics, structuralism, feminism and contemporary questions about political belonging.

Not bad

Overall not bad read. The book gets to involved into the details of personnel like awards,badges etc. I was Hopi ng it would have described the final battle of Wittman but it did not

Detailed History of top Waffen SS Tiger Commanders!

The Eastern Front experiences of the world's most successful tank ace, Michael Wittmann, and those of his fellow Waffen SS Tiger commanders of the Leibstandarte Division are covered in this first of two volumes published by Stackpole Books.

This first volume does provide a great deal of information of Wittmann and his comrades and the combat activities of the 4th (Heavy) Company from its creation in January 1943 to early June 1944 when Wittmann & his comrades, now part of the 101st SS Panzer Battalion, found themselves in France awaiting the Allied invasion. Numerous first-person accounts of Wittmann, the man and the military commander, abound. Though many are written in the stilted, stiff wartime style, they do present a coherent picture of an exemplary commander and a superlative fighting leader. The book also includes testimonials to other Waffen SS commanders and many accounts of Eastern Front action. Unfortunately the book, originally published in Germany, is a ponderous read.

The book also features over 300 photographs of Wittmann, his comrades, their tanks, Soviet opponents, etc. Unfortunately photo reproduction quality is poor; most shots are muddy. There are a number of battle maps included but they are are hard to understand and add little to the narrative. I did find the inclusion of the various units' Order of Battle fascinating. At a single glance you could see how many tanks the unit possessed, supporting flak units, scout cars, supply trucks, etc. and realize how large an organization the 10st, for example, was.

All in all, Agte's book is a mixed blessing. Lots of info on Wittmann, other Tiger commanders and Eastern Front battles but it's presented in a plodding, graceless narrative. Lots of rare photos but they're poorly reproduced, etc. Reasonable price ($19.95) but remember: you still need to pick up volume 2 to see how it all ends!

A bit disappointed

I purchased this book and volume 2 on the hope of reading about Michael Wittman, at the time of this review I had not started the second volume.

The book does have a lot of information about the Tiger Aces of the Leibstandarte and their battles / triumphs but Michael Wittman has been regulated as one of the Tiger Aces. The book does give a number of mentions of him, but if you are looking for a history solely on him you are going to be disappointed, I gave the book 3 stars for that reason only, for an overall history of the Tiger Aces the book is worth 4 stars.
