Not all that simple for US undergrads

Really, I could give this book four stars on some points, like its introducing Lagrangian mechanics at an introductory level. And it isn't a bad book at all -- just that it is NOT for first year undergrads at US universities as it is for Europeans who tend to be ahead of us at this level. It uses vector calculus almost from the start, for example, and its problem sets are difficult compared to most problems in Serway and other standard first-year physics texts. However, as a supplement (if you want to spend $37 for a small book), it will likely give you more of an edge in the long run if you can figure it out.

A little bit of culinary history

Let's be honest. You're looking at this book because you want the official Bellini recipe. Page 6, and make sure you get some really good peaches.

Now then. As an Italian cookbook in and of itself, it's middling; the food is a mix of northern Italian and classical French, which seems about par for the course for a world-famous restaurant in one of the most touristy cities in the world. Cipriani puts polenta right up front, and tentatively claims credit on the restaurant's behalf for bringing it from peasantdom to restaurant tables worldwide (and brags about the Veneto-style white polenta). I'm actually a little disappointed to find that the selection of seafood recipes is on the small side, but overall, the food is tasty.

One thing that will probably surprise the crap out of you is that this is a relatively small book, only 200 pages despite its size. That works out fine, though -- this is a heavy-duty book with the spine on top and a built-in easel in the back cover designed for kitchen use, and the bulk comes from using paper that approaches cardstock in thickness to make pages more robust when being flipped over. (It also has an arrangement where half the pages run front to back, then you turn the book around and flip back to the beginning for the rest of the book. Very convenient, and clever.)

Overall, I suspect the appeal of this book skews a little towards older people who always liked Hemingway and/or Venice. No matter; it's still a pretty cool book from a very famous place that most people have only ever heard of in books and magazine articles.

A Legend.

If simplicity is the Italian food anthem than the ingredients speak it's language, the flavor is organically driven by product itself and not a mash up to simply deliver something and that's how I believe the cuisine was formed and recognized, we are lucky if we get to replicate it with this stunning cookbook no matter where we live, I had to leaf through it twice while trying to remain calm, I felt as if the secrets and knowledge of an ancient kitchen have washed up ashore to my feet for the taking when I saw this book as available, I am not joking, I literally jumped in my chair. As a foodie I know Harry's Bar and it's mystique, the ham and cheese sauce crustless grilled cheese is legendary itself...some like Julia Child complained that there is no cooking involved lol. I love French best but Italian can't be denied by anyone who has a tongue and an interest in age old sublime flavor captured as the Italian kitchen can provide. Great ingredients, not too many things, it's what makes an unforgettable meal, one that you repeat enough to call a classic for a reason. This is an incredible book filled with classically delicious recipes encased in a velvet box with its wild leopard cover, its both sassy and luxurious with its looks and recipe choices, just like the restaurant itself.

I made a few pastas from it but I haven't done a full dive yet, It's not surprising when cooking Italian food how few ingredients can provide such rounded flavor, but the pairings taught here with truly minimal effort are worthy of anything in return, I will have to make some sweets from it and edit the review, so far I only tried a few savory dishes and they were unexpectedly sophisticated and made me look like a culinary genius again, evidentially a simple yet sumpcious Asparagus Risotto is not bad on Tuesday night at 8pm when everyone is starved and grumpy, the only down side was no leftovers. I read the entire book twice, makes for the best morning weekend with coffee reading in bed, then off to the store :)

"Simply Italian Classic Recipes from Harry's Bar in Venice" is a display book beautifully executed. Its stylish high gloss front and red back cover fold out in easel format to present its contents and recipes printed on smooth medium weight ivory card stock. Recipe pages are titled in matte gold print with beautifully photographed colored pictures, held together by a large black matte wire spiral binding.

The format is tactile; begging to be touched and flipped through. Perfect for setting out on your granite kitchen or bar counter or restaurant maître d' station. It fits in a cardboard slip cover.

Care is dedicated to tips. I am not sure how useful that is to you but it's a conversation piece. The recipes for the most part are simple, easy to execute and taste good. This is one of the rare times I might say, we are more likely to be concerned about blemishes, dents and scratches than we are about how well the recipe turns out.

Harry's global brand includes over a dozen bar locations around the world along with named brand pastas, sauces, oils, kitchenware and cookbooks. Harry's Bar in Venice is a short walk from Piazza San Marco and the place to see and be seen. Its expensive but you are not really there for the food, tasty as it might be. "Simply Italian" is similar cachet. As a cookbook, there are better and more useful for taking shelf space and pleasing your family's gourmand. Pick your price point for presentation. As a display book, it is - pretty.

Going through the motions

This story is borderline 2 stars. I love Percy Jackson. And Harry Potter. I have a minor in Latin. This book was written for me. Or maybe my children or nephews. I was really excited for it. Magic, and Roman History in the gritty setting of a Roman slave.

This book has none of that. The setting is Rome in name only. My first clue should have been how very un-Roman every body except Julius Caesars character is. And everything else is just as "phoned in." The action is ho hum till the end. I found myself caring very little for the main character and having almost no insight into what his world was really like. The main character is not much of a character. The bad guys are pretty vanilla. The setting might as well be 'generic' ancient times. The story is pretty generic too.

You really get the feeling that this story was written and rushed out to capitalize on the ending of the Percy Jackson series. Jennifer Nielsen is a very good author (or was in here previous novels) and this doesnt feel like her previous novels. The whole thing just feels so forgettable and like her heart wasn't in it. Such a let down for me personally. As a lover of the classics and fiction.

Realizing this novel is not aimed at me, I tried to get two kids to read this book. One nephew and one cousin. The guy was a 6th grader who's favorite subject is ancient history and incessantly buggering me (in the most lovable way possible) about Percy Jackson and Greek Gods and why are they different then Roman Gods, etc. He borrowed over its Christmas break and finished because his mom made him. He felt like it was a chore and didn't think it was Roman at all and tired to give it back early. My adorable 3rd grade cousin who loves childrens books like the Heir series, and HP, and Percy and she was able to get 1/4 of the way through it before moving on. So its just not me. Theres nothing terrible about this book, except maybe the unRoman Roman setting, but everything else is just un-compelling.

Needs some work.

This book had a lot of potential. I liked the story line, but the characters were underdeveloped and there was virtually no world building.
I am not a fan of books that are written in the first person for this very reason. It is harder to develop the characters. This means that you really don't get to know anyone very well other than NIc, the main protagonist. And even his character was all over the place.

I love a little magic in my books, but in this case, the magic just didn't work for me, because like the characters, it was all over the place and nothing really made sense. I really struggled with this book and it took me a very long time to read it because I just wasn't that interested.
The setting is in Ancient Rome, and you get a little history there, slavery, Kings, Julius Caesar, etc. but not enough to really make the book any better.

There is quite a bit of action in the book to keep you from getting too bored. I think this book would be good for younger readers who aren't concerned with things the way an adult would be, but things need to make sense, and magic has to have laws and consequences, and this book was just all over the place with it. And the only way you really knew you were in Rome, was when it was mentioned. It was never "shown". Show me, don't tell me!

An Adventurous Journey with a Worthy Cliffhanger in MARK OF THE THIEF

The treasonous General Radulf selects Nicolas (Nic) Calva, a slave in the mines south of Rome, to enter an accursed cave in search of Julius Caesar's bulla, a good luck pendant. Not only does Nic locate the bulla, but he also receives a mysterious marking on his back from Caela, a griffin that scratches him. Nick and Caela go to Rome, where he learns about the magic powers that come from the marking and the bulla, but the trip takes him further away from Livia, his enslaved younger sister.

Radulf intends to steal Nic's powers to overtake the notorious Praetors, so Nic goes into hiding while he continues to search for Livia. There’s also a deeper, magical connection between Radulf, Nic, and Livia --- one that Nic will do everything in his power to destroy.

New York Times best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen has once again keyed into her world of make believe to produce a fantastical tale, the first book in a new Praetor War series. Nielsen has created a host of characters tightly woven into Roman mythology and history. And while she includes a plethora of historical names, places and even terminology from that time period, Nielsen centers her first person narrative on Nic, an underdog who is constantly reminded of his lowly status amid powers that he neither expected to possess nor has any idea how to use. While the underdog-power combo is reminiscent of Harry Potter, Nic doesn't have the strong trio friendship that Harry has. Eventually though, Aurelia, who is an interesting character, to say the least, befriends Nic.

Nielsen throws in a handful of red herrings within her cast. Indeed, there are a handful of Jekyll-and-Hyde characters that make it is difficult to assess who is trustworthy and who is not. To add to the mix, Nielsen includes continual scene changes, which are both action-packed and un-hackneyed. Although Nielsen keeps her readers on their toes, they will be always cheering Nic on to win over evil. Full of adventure, MARK OF THE THIEF closes with a startling cliffhanger that will keep readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

A perfect book for the beginning model engineer.

It has been two months since I received this book and I have already built two of the engines shown! (they run perfectly). The author guides you through the building process as if he were beside you all the time, even though, a little machining experience is needed.

Decades of experience in one nice little book.

Having watched dozens of the excellent videos the author of this book, Tubal Cain, has posted on YouTube I can't help but hear his voice as he walks the reader through the fabrication and assembly of variations on a simple "rocker" style steam engine. As the title notes, these are SIMPLE steam engines, and as such this book should be recognized as a jumping off point for a fledgling machinist as opposed to the "end all be all" authority on scale steam engines. All four of the engines presented do use the same piston/cylinder/valve plate arrangement at their core. The variations come with how the "power" unit is applied to the various designs. Mr. Cain (for those unfortunate enough to be unfamiliar) spent most of his life as a machinist, and then as a teacher in shop classes passing on his skills to young "apprentices" (back in the days before rampant litigation caused the demise of traditional high school shop classes.) His descriptions are thorough and detailed, fortified with copious detailed mechanical drawings and photographs, all combining to make for a fascinating study into the world of miniature steam power. The author's dry wit seeps through from time to time (just like in his videos), giving the reader an impression of hearing the descriptions "right from the horses mouth". A nice bonus is that the text and illustrations are coordinated such that the reader has the various parts and assemblies being described right there in front of them along side of the text. (I hate when a manual refers to, say, "figure 2-5", which is several pages ahead or behind the text!) People like Tubal Cain are a vanishing resource. Fortunately for us, and generations to follow, this dedicated gentleman machinist has recorded for posterity not only the nifty little engines in this book, but also countless hours of videos that make it clear how the myriad operations expected of a competent machinist are carried out, and how to do them right!

A good book

This book gives fairly good instuction on how to build a few types of small model stationary steam engines. But it could use some
more detail and better illistations.
A steam engine is a pretty simple device, but keep in mind that you are not going to build one on your kitchen counter. The author
assumes that you have basic machining workshop skills and know how a steam engine operates. You will need to be able to use a
lathe (also a mill would make it easier, but not required) and be able to do a little brasing and grinding.
This isn`t rocket science, but you will need the tools and know how to use them.
