Fascinated by Patagonia since an early childhood lust for Grandma's scrap of hairy Giant Sloth skin, Chatwin's also intrigued by odd miners and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy in Cholila. In 1977 the London Observer called it "a brilliant travel book," and while Chatwin's no longer alive (he died in 1989), his book still glows. From Rio Negro to the southernmost town of Ushuaia, Chatwin depicts all in writing as spare as the Patagonian desert itself, and as vibrant as the purple clouds off Last Hope Sound.

About the Author
Bruce Chatwin (1940–1989) was the author of In Patagonia, The Viceroy of Ouidah, On the Black Hill, The Songlines, and Utz. His other books are What Am I Doing Here and Anatomy of Restlessness, posthumous anthologies of shorter works, and Far Journeys, a collection of his photographs that also includes selections from his travel notebooks.

A Vivid Imagination and a Powerfully Bracing Landscape Makes for a Superb Travelogue

Published back in 1978, Bruce Chatwin's seamless mix of fact and fiction is still among the most enthralling of travel books. Prompted by a piece of reddish animal skin he found in his grandmother's curio cabinet when he was a child, the author ignites himself on a flight of fancy about its origin. This leads him to an expansive area of wild beauty, Patagonia on South America's southernmost tip. I have been lucky enough to visit this part of the world myself about four years ago, and I can confirm from my travels that Chatwin does an amazing job of capturing not only its physical splendor but its colorful inhabitants. However, this is no linear travel narrative, as the author breaks his stories down into mini-sections, ninety-seven in total.

Several of the episodes deal with his own experiences on the road and the individuals he encounters like the gauchos on the pampas, the Welsh-originated villagers, a French soprano, and a hippie from Haight-Ashbury looking for work in the mines. Interspersed with these accounts are snippets of history, real or imagined, such as an unknown connection between Magellan's expedition and Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the whereabouts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid after they left the states, and a 19th-century European lawyer who convinced the local Araucanian Indians to elect him their monarch. Chatwin shows particular gift for culling whimsical trivia into a greater storytelling context that is hard to resist as long as the reader is aware that little of it is verifiable. He inevitably ends the book the way he started - by finding the source of the animal scrap. Few writers have shown such a vivid imagination and a powerful sense of imagery as Chatwin has with his splendid travelogue. This will make those with an extreme case of wanderlust want to book their flights to Punta Arenas, Chile, right away.

Couldn't put it down - I even read it under my desk at work

This is a wonderful collection of tall tales, fiction, fact and bizarre anecdotes, loosely connected by their association with a sparsely populated part of South America. Unfortunately critics and publishers in their obsessive need to categorise books, called it a Travel Book. This was misleading, as are the claims that he reinvented travel writing or had some sort of unique insight into Patagonia, its people, history and landscape. Chatwin was primarily a storyteller, not a travel writer or an expert on Southern Argentina. His talent for the 5-6 page yarn is unparalleled in modern literature and this is as good as anything he wrote.

The best way to read Chatwin's fabulous memoir of Patagonian travel is aloud while driving through contemporary Argentina. Patagonia still haunts and holds great mystery in its vast expanses and contrasts. It is even a great read for those who never leave home. One has a sense that Patagonia, far from being the end of the world is its very center. All roads seem to have led there and returned.

About the Author

Kathleen Stassen Berger completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University and Radcliffe College, earned her M.A.T. from Harvard University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva University. Her broad range of experience as an educator includes directing a preschool, teaching philosophy and humanities at the United Nations International School, teaching child and adolescent development to graduate students at Fordham University, teaching inmates earning paralegal degrees at Sing Sing Prison, and teaching undergraduates at both Montclair State University and Quinnipiac University. She has also been involved in education as the president of Community School Board in District Two in Manhattan.

For over three decades, Berger has taught human development at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. The students Kathleen Berger teaches every year come from diverse ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds representing a wide range of interests and consistently honor her with the highest teaching evaluations.

Berger’s developmental texts are currently being used at nearly 700 colleges and universities in a dozen countries and in five languages. Kathleen’s research interests include adolescent identity, sibling relationships, and bullying. As the mother of four daughters, as well as a new grandmother, she brings to her teaching and writing ample firsthand experience with human development.

This loose leaf version of the text is an amazing bargin. However, the publisher did not take into account how you would store the papers - the holes punched in it do NOT fit in a standard 3-ring binder, they are not spaced properly. This happened to every student in my course.

The text provides an informative, easy-to-read introduction to developmental psychology. Some students found the numerous side notes to be a bit distracting while going through their chapters.

I used this edition instead of the 2nd edition

I used this edition instead of the newer 2nd edition for my Fall 2014 Developmental Psy class. The chapters are the same as the newer edition with the only differences being page numbers and a few pictures that were added. Buy the 1st edition, its much cheaper and there is very little difference between this one and the 2nd edition.

Good Textbook, Not Much Difference From Newer Editions

I bought this to save the money from the newer edition and so far haven't noticed any needed changes with my tests at all, been passing them no problems! This is a pretty informative text about the lifespan from fetus to oldage, each chapter covering each stage of the human development. It is interesting for a parent, a psychology student, sociology student, future teacher or anyone really. Highly Recommended!

You don't have to be a child to enjoy this book!

Alabaster's Song is a story that you should own, even if you don't have a child. It is warm and sweet, and brings you back to the place where the child inside each one of us still lives.
As always, Max Lucado has the gift of reaching down into the depths of your heart and soul, and touching you, drawing you closer to God.
Make this book part of your library, part of your Christmas traditions. I read it each year to my "babies", who are now 19, 17, and 13. It is a tradition I will carry on with my grandchildren.

Wonderful story for Christmastime or anytime

This is a fabulous book that brings to mind the wonder of Christmas through a child's eyes. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is timeless and unforgettable! I read this story to my children, ages 11, 8, and 4, each year around Christmas. I even read it to my MOPS group as a Christmas reading last year. Thank you, Max Lucado, for another wonderful children's book!

Angels & Christmas--an unbeatable combination!

Very cute story about a little boy whose Christmas Tree angel comes to life to sing sweet songs to him. Gorgeous artwork brings the story to life with brilliance. I loved that the story repeated itself once the little boy grew up and had a son of his own who hears the angels music.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE 5 Day Pouch Owners Manual. Complete waste of money!!! They are the exact same recipes, there are not even extra recipes added that weren't in the owners manual.

Very interesting novel. It gives you a look into a writers mind and into he process that goes into writing a novel. Has a very different story line than anything that I have ever read. Since this book is more modern it was very easy to read. I would recommend it.

The Story of One's Life

There is a sense of the autobiographical in this novel which in fact is quite appropriate when one considers the actual pivot around which the whole plot revolves. As a note of caution however I must add that I make this statement without having any knowledge at all of Muriel Spark's actual life. As the author spins out the plot she manages to capture the essence of the main character's experience as a secretary for a group of people organized by an individual with the sole aim of writing their biographies so that they may be put away in a safe place for seventy years and their contents not actually revealed until all the people mentioned in these sets of memoirs are actually no longer alive. The idea is that this will be of interest to the historian of the future. Not that the novel itself concentrates unduly on the efforts of this group but rather on the intellectual and emotional reactions of the novel's main character, a young writer whose main concurrent aim in life is to get her first novel published. She is quite a likeable and attractive character and in fact she seems to be the only normal person amongst the rest of the characters portrayed in the novel, even though this impression may in fact be subconsciously and gradually formed in the reader's mind by the first-person point of view of the novel since everything is seen and judged through the eyes of the novel's main character. Even though this is a rather short book it is rather rich with experience and latent meaning well beyond the mere surface of the mostly humorous type of entertainment that pervades it from beginning to end.

About the Author

Marian Quigley, PhD, BA, HDTS (Art & Craft) is an Adjunct Research Fellow in the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, an Animation Curator for australianscreen online, and a freelance writer, editor, and artist. Marian has over thirty years of teaching experience in secondary and tertiary institutions teaching Art, English, Creative Writing, Communications, Media Studies and Information Ethics and has also supervised a number of postgraduate and honours students. Prior to her retirement in 2006, she was a senior lecturer, postgraduate coordinator and director of research in the Berwick School of Information Technology, Monash University. Marian's major research interests are the social effects of information and communication technologies and animation. Clementine has had many not-so-good days. But this one just might be the worst. She loses her favorite hat, her science project is ruined and the "family meeting!" sign is up on the refrigerator-that's never a good thing. Even though family meetings are supposed to be about family issues, Clementine usually ends up getting in trouble. But this one is different. Clementine's dad announces that their family is going to grow. Are they are getting a gorilla, like Clementine has always wanted?! No. It's a new baby. Clementine is N-O-T, not happy. They are a family of four. Four is a perfect number. In infallible Clementine reasoning: "Four can be two and two sometimes, and nobody is lonely. Two kids and two grown-ups. Two boys and two girls. There are four sides to the kitchen table, so we each get one." Five just doesn't work. Pennypacker tackles the oft-written new-baby theme from a refreshing, older perspective; jealousy is not the foremost emotion, it's vulnerability. Everything is changing too fast. Clementine's fifth adventure for early chapter-book readers addresses a topic many children can relate to. The third-grader's parents call a family meeting to announce that a new baby is on the way. Clementine's reaction to the news is realistic she says "No thanks!" She argues that four is the perfect number for a family, for reasons as varied as there are four sides to a puzzle to the fact that hot dogs come in packages of eight, so a family of four can have two each. Her parents are a little surprised by her reaction but take the time to try to understand how she is feeling and demonstrate how special she is to them. Sara Pennypacker (www.sarapennypacker.com) is the author of four previous Clementine books and Sparrow Girl, illustrated by Yoko Tanaka. She divides her time between Texas and Massachusetts.

Marla Frazee (www.marlafrazee.com) has illustrated all of the Clementine books and many other beloved titles. She has been awarded a Caldecott Honor on two occasions, for All the World by Liz Garton Scanlon, and for A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever, which she also wrote. She lives in Pasadena, California, where she works in a small backyard cabin under an avocado tree.

Lots of laughter and smiles.

One of the things that I enjoy most about the Clementine books is the fact that Clementine seems so real, just like the kids I work with every day. She has her strengths (very observant, kind heart, willing to work) and her weaknesses (fidgety, impulsive). She has good days and bad days just like every child does. She has problems at school (missing science project rat) and at home (adjusting to a baby on the way). But Clementine's family and friends are interesting characters as well and are more than just secondary characters.

The writing is superb and very suitable for a third grader, I can here her voice in my head even when I am not reading the book. The illustrations by Caldecott Honor winning Marla Frazee provide the perfect compliment to the writing. Overall, a great addition to the series and I highly recommend the whole series.

A gem of a book.

I remember reading the first Clementine book a few years ago and laughing out loud. The series has quickly become a favorite and Clementines's fans and new readers will love this addition. Clementine's mom is pregnant, her friend Margaret is obsessed with make-up and the rat being used in her science experiment is missing. Just how much is a third grade girl supposed to handle?

Not only does Clementine have an understanding teacher, her parents are amazing. They know what to say and how to say it and twice I found myself tearing up. Written so young readers will not only want to read this book they will fall in love with Clementine and her family. Recommended for those who enjoy Ivy and Bean, Judy Moody and Kylie Jean and for readers graduating from easy chapter books. Do you think we will ever find out Clementine's little brother's real name? When Clementine's parents call a family meeting, the third grader is pretty sure the agenda won't be good. In fact, she's fairly certain she's in trouble for something. But she never would've guessed that they had such big news: her mom is pregnant!

Sara Pennypacker's latest, CLEMENTINE AND THE FAMILY MEETING, is just as funny, insightful and charming as the four previous Clementine books. This time out, Clementine is dealing with disappointment and changes not only from her parents' revelation, but also at school and with her friend Margaret. Margaret is Clementine's older and sometimes wiser friend. Lately, she has been driving Clementine crazy with talk of moving to California to be a make-up artist. The make-up is bad enough, but Clementine gets sad thinking about the loss of her friend. Even though she is confident Margaret won't really move, as Clementine watches her mature, she feels like she is losing her just a bit anyway. Yet her evolving friendship with Margaret is just one of the things Clementine is dealing with.

At school, the rat that she was supposed to train for a science experiment, Eighteen, has escaped. She is worried about it, but is also anxious about her science partner's claim that he has superhero powers and that they should be the focus of their work now that the rat is gone. And, to top it all off, Clementine's very favorite hat, knitted by her grandmother, is missing. While she is focused on Eighteen, the hat and Margaret, the idea of the baby is never off her mind. Why should they go from a family of four to a family of five when they are so great as a family of four? How will they all fit in the apartment? Will the baby have a fruit name like she does, or will she have to give it a vegetable nickname like her brother? Clementine is not convinced that a baby is a good idea at all.

But, as her other problems resolve, Clementine comes to terms with the baby. No matter how she changes, Margaret is still her friend. Her hat and Eighteen (and five little surprises) are found together at school. She is reminded of how great being a big sister can be. A brand-new, grown-up tool belt full of brand-new, grown-up tools, makes her feel much better. And a very special building project may be just what she needs to get over the emotional shock she felt at the family meeting.

CLEMENTINE AND THE FAMILY MEETING is a lovely chapter book. The writing is sincere and entertaining, and the emotional register spot-on. Clementine is at once a plucky and funky storybook heroine and a relatable every-girl. Once again, Pennypacker's story is perfectly punctuated by Marla Frazee's great pen and ink drawings. This is a very welcome addition to the series, but works well as a stand-alone book exploring the joys and pains of transitions and the adventure of growing up.
