sexy shifter series!
By K. April Holgate
This was a shorter read in the series. A really good story about two opposites attracting. Predator and Prey make a love match!

Venny is a great character, independent and strong. It is too bad she does not see her own uniqueness as a plus. But it is easy to think you are wrong when that is all you ever here.

Athon started out as a bit of a jerk but then you find that is just his gruff exterior. He ends up being deliciously Alpha and uber supportive!

Another great tall about the Crossroad and I can not wait to see more of the residents stories!

A little light on the steam. The sex scene was totally hot and heavy but there could have been more. We sort of skimmed the whole in heat phase!

Love that the author gives you a tidbit about who's story is next! It makes you eager to jump into the next book!

I loved this story
By Ashley Gibson
This is the tale of Venny (an albino reindeer) who finds the man she was promised to as a mate with her cousin. She travels to the crossroads where she meets Athon (a lone wolf). From the moment they meet the sparks fly. Venny is in heat and needs to mate and Athos is determined that he be the only candidate.

I loved this story, all was not smooth sailing between venny and athon, which is often how it works. But these two lonely people finally found love and acceptance within each others arms.

Outstanding series
By Loves to read and review
This is the fourth book I've read in this series and I'm looking forward to the rest. They are short enough for me (who reads 485 wpm) to be able to enjoy the great sex scenes, the interesting plots, which are completely different for each book, and still finish a few books before going to bed. There is excellent character development, some fun fights and love in the end. Who can ask for more?

A celebrated astronomer makes a powerful case for the harmony between two of physics’ most important and seemingly contradictory theories

The twentieth century gave us two great theories of physics. The general theory of relativity describes the behavior of very large things, and quantum theory the behavior of very small things. In this landmark book, John Gribbin—one of the best-known science writers of the past thirty years—presents his own version of the Holy Grail of physics, the search that has been going on for decades to find a unified “Theory of Everything” that combines these ideas into one mathematical package, a single equation that could be printed on a T-shirt, containing the answer to life, the Universe, and everything. With his inimitable mixture of science, history, and biography, Gribbin shows how—despite skepticism among many physicists—these two great theories are very compatible, and point to a deep truth about the nature of our existence. The answer lies, intriguingly, with the age of the universe: 13.8 billion years.

By theguy
The book describes in detail for the layman the evolution of the theories and discoveries attempting to determine the age of the universe. Most areas are quite clear but in some of them, by necessity, the reader has to accept things as they are, which is unavoidable when trying to condensate all the theories and discoveries for non-specialists in one book.

Review
"George Dickie's Art and Value is an elegant restatement of the virtues of the institutional theory of art and his conception of artistic evaluation. This lively and trenchant riposte to critics will ensure that his work remains much discussed and will prove to be an invaluable resource for students." Matthew Kieran, University of Leeds.

"Professor Dickie does an excellent job combining and articulating the insights accumulated during his long career in the philosophy of art. Of special significance is his discussion of how 'what is art' relates to 'what is good art?" George Bailey, East Carolina University.

From the Back Cover
For much of the last half-century, George Dickie has been one of the preeminent philosophers of art in the Anglo-American tradition, deeply influencing the generations of theorists who have followed. He is most frequently associated with his "institutional theory of art," which situates the classification of objects as artworks in social practices and institutions, rather than in the ontology of objects or in features of human psychology.

Art and Value focuses broadly on questions of history, methods, and the nature of art theories, as well as the value and evaluation of art. The discussions are crisp and clear, and the conclusions are consistently illuminating.

This book serves as a valuable primer to aesthetics, as well as a summary and extension of Dickie's contribution to the field.

About the Author
George Dickie is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Aesthetics: An Introduction (1971), Art and the Aesthetic: An Institutional Analysis (1974), The Art Circle (1984), The Century of Taste (1996), and Evaluating Art (1988). He co-edited Aesthetics: A Critical Anthology (1989, second edition), and Introduction to Aesthetics (1997).

Make the Deal: Negotiating Mergers and Acquisitions (Bloomberg Financial), by Christopher S. Harrison

A comprehensive introduction to today's M&A strategies

Make the Deal is a direct and accessible guide to striking a powerful M&A deal. Merging business, finance, and law, this insightful examination of M&A strategy is designed to help you understand M&A negotiations and the ways in which the final outcome affects your financial future. A general overview of an acquisition agreement framework segues into a more detailed discussion of different deal structures, including stock sales, mergers, asset sales, and complex structures, giving you the information you need to know when each one applies best in practice. You'll gain insight into real-world negotiations and the delicate balancing act that occurs as each party attempts to maximize value and minimize risk, and learn the potential pitfalls that can occur. Negotiation statistics and samples from actual contracts back the war stories throughout, and reinforce the idea that there's no single perfect solution.

As a topic of study, M&A is constantly evolving; in practice, it changes at the speed of light. Staying ahead of the market is the single most critical element of making the best deal, and the strategy that worked for one deal most likely won't work for the next. Instead of simply providing a list of strategies that have worked in the past, this book shows you why they worked, so you can tailor your strategy specifically to your next deal.

  • Learn how M&A contract terms affect economic outcomes
  • Examine the techniques and mechanics of today's acquisition agreements
  • Develop a legal framework that supports your business strategy
  • Follow the ups and downs that arise in real-world cases

A successful M&A transaction requires both attention to detail and a big picture view, combined with skill, intellect, and ingenuity. Make the Deal brings it all together to show you how to run the table and come away with a win.

From the Inside Flap

No deal is like another. And any one deal can take various legal shapes, but you do not have a deal until you have a structure. Depending on the legal terms used, what seems like a straightforward business proposition can have highly disparate economic outcomes. To navigate this process successfully, the lawyer has to think in business terms and the business person has to understand the function and potential of the different legal elements that make the deal.

In Make the Deal, Mergers and Acquisition pundit Christopher S. Harrison combines business, finance, and legal expertise to provide an essential and highly accessible overview of the complicated and often labyrinthous M&A process. Showing how legal form conditions the economic outlook, he reveals what it takes to support a business strategy with a legal framework and what the economic ramifications of specific deal terms and their interrelations might be.

Intended as a tool for both business leaders and lawyers as well as students who aspire to such roles, Make the Deal not only offers a comprehensive and comprehensible compendium of deal terminology, but also provides a road map of how the various terms interact, how to negotiate one point with all the others in mind, and how to organize a successful deal process. Compelling war stories highlight what is at stake. Sample provisions give examples of clear, effective deal language. And easily readable graphics synthesize exhaustive deal study data to give the practitioner and the student a keen sense for the realities of the M&A market.

A powerful and approachable guide to the legal framework of deal making
By Todd H.
This book provides an elegant and deep explanation of the legal framework of deal making. The author has a special way of demystifng otherwise arcane legal concepts in the context of business. The war stories in particular bridge the gap between standard legal provisions and the potential economic outcome in real life. A great read for people who love the art and science of deal making.

The Practical Guide I Return To Again and Again
By Craig Pacheco
Christopher Harrison was my professor for his NYU course "Negotiating Corporate Transactions." As a teacher, he was engaging and came across as a seasoned expert in this practice area. If you are a person who learns by example, the "War Stories" Professor Harrison intersperses throughout the book are invaluable illustrations of common (and unique) situations that come up during negotiations. And the structure of the book, taking each section of a merger agreement or purchase agreement and breaking down negotiating points within that section analyzing how those might relate to other key sections of the agreement, is as close to practice as any exercise we did in law school. Now, as a first-year associate practicing M&A, I recognize Make the Deal as the MOST practical and helpful book of the many, many books I purchased during law school, and the one book I find myself returning to again and again.

I found it to be particular useful in forming arguments centered around corporate contract disputes
By Moshe Schwartz
I have taken Prof.'s Harrison's Negotiating Mergers and Acquisition class in NYU Law and I can say without hesitation that it was one of the most important law school experiences for my legal and business career. In "Make the Deal," Prof. Harrison condenses years of tier 1 M&A experience and allows the reader to understand, appreciate and master the art of a deal. This book is a must read for anyone interested in drafting/negotiation any kind of corporate transactions. As a former litigator, I found it to be particular useful in forming arguments centered around corporate contract disputes.

A stunning collection
By demerson19
Death and life have long been tied together in literature, a reflection of our shared experience. One of the strongest connections between the two is grief when life transfers into death and love takes on the lens of loss. All these elements emerge strongly in Kathleen McGookey's stunning book of poems, Stay. From the loss of children not yet born, to the loss of parents long lived, McGookey struggles to retain what is lost and to accept what is left.

McGookey writes prose poems, allowing her the freedom to develop her thoughts while using the fragmentation of poetry to create lines of depth. In "Shallow" she describes a living moon. "She is pinned to the sky, unapproachable: to be aloof, to be cold and disinterested and not afraid if anyone knows is a decent strategy." McGookey clearly does not emulate these traits, and so her poems reach out to the reader.

We listen as McGookey interprets life through the decision of becoming a mother, and then the mother who does not conceive. In "Again" she opens with: "Never conceived, never arrived into the light and the clatter and the chill. Never rapt, like a statue. Never arrived for the slap..." She is grieving the loss of the life never created with the same intensity we grieve the loss of those who die. In both situations, we are left with an absence. One carries memories and the other possibilities, but neither are tangible no matter how much they are experienced.

She is continually struck by the grief and horror an individual can experience that does not impact the world. How life seems to go on all around you as your own life falls apart. In "Like Stars" she describes an awe-inspiring evening setting full of the life of insects and birds, and ends with the line: "Right now my friend is having a baby boy who is expected to die." In "Sometimes the Ache Sleeps" we see her facing her parent's declining health, "But each day the purple morning glories bloomed after the sun rose, and each day promised to be just like the one before." At times, the poet seems to be torn between the thankfulness for ongoing life and being stunned that all the world does not understand your grief. But grief, while universally experienced, is a private affair.

The title poem expresses a theme found throughout these poems. The longing to hang on to what we had while having what is changing. She wants to stay with her ailing mom, who sends her up to her husband. But they only trade places so the husband cares for her mother while she nurses her child. We have a desire to keep what we have, yet we want what we do not have. You cannot care for your dying mother and your young son at the same time. We desire change and we desire to stay in our place.

Clearly, this collection is full of much pain. But she does not lose herself in the pain. She acknowledges it, struggles with it, but still recognizes the beauty around her. She seems in awe of life, wanting to experience it from a distance but finding herself an active part of it. When no hope seems left, she finds it in a note from her mother, the unconditional love of her child, or in the vision of a teenage boy with one leg water skiing and looking for girls in bikinis.

Crafting the Courage to Stay
By Glassworks Magazine
Katie Budris:
Kathleen McGookey’s words are brave. She begins her latest collection, Stay, with a quote by Gary Young: “The worst thing you can imagine is not the worst thing that can happen to you.” And yet, worse for McGookey translates to great for the reader. Her bravery comes across on every page, not as a battle cry or manifesto, but slowly, quietly, in the most unassuming way. The vulnerability permeating each poem is, perhaps, the bravest words can be.
As a woman who relates to the early poems in Stay, I am immediately hooked. The speaker, an adult woman, presumably McGookey herself, is surrounded by children and isn’t sure she wants one. And she isn’t shy about revealing her hesitancies. She fears what many women fear, but which most of us are ashamed to say aloud: that if she couldn’t even grow vegetables, how could she possibly care for a child? Or worse, that she isn’t the heroine of her own story.

McGookey presents these fears unflinchingly through a combination of metaphor, imagery, and direct narrative. In a first person poem, “More Expectations,” the speaker and her partner wonder what they are saving or waiting for in life, the first indication in the collection our heroine might be trying to have a child: “We’d picnicked near a field, not golden and alive in the wind, but plowed and not yet planted, not opportunity, just work, hard work and the unelegant sun.” This desolate nature imagery resurfaces in “The Accident,” when a childless wife wonders if she has made the right choice by not having kids: “Red dust from the road gathered in her kitchen’s corners while she dreamed of ropes and coyotes.”

Just in case we miss these implications, McGookey occasionally tells it like it is, the second poem in the collection opening boldly with: “The heroine doesn’t know if she wants a child. What kind of story is this?” (“Lament”). She further compounds her uncertainty by connecting to the world around her too, as she shocks the reader by ending what appears to be a simple poem about the night sky revealing: “Right now my friend is having a baby boy who is expected to die” (“Like Stars”). Her directness is both stunning and appreciated. And the fears she expresses must be common, because I am right there with her in every word although society tells us women we should not feel these things, should not say them aloud.

In keeping with the style of her previous work, McGookey writes entirely in prose poem form. This lends itself well to the confessional nature of each poem as she admits, “Writing’s more private than birth” (“Birth Poem”). Almost half the poems have single word titles, such as “Shallow,” “Wish,” “Waiting,” and “Onion,” implying simplicity. Yet, while each poem is intensely focused, the dichotomies of life and death, joy and sorrow, acceptance and anger, are anything but. Just as easily as McGookey confesses the forbidden complexities of life and womanhood, her fear shifts; maybe she does want a child, but maybe she can’t have one. New fears arise coated in grief as the poems progress through frustration, failed and then unexpectedly successful attempts to conceive, and the declining health and death of both her parents.

To be clear: while she expresses deep fears, the tone of her work is not fearful. Perhaps uncertain is a more appropriate term, or inquisitive. She crafts the poems in such a way that it seems she is consistently in control of her emotional experience. Especially intriguing is McGookey’s recurring personification of “My Anger.” The aptly titled poem near middle of the collection asserts, “Today I sent My Anger to yoga at 5 a.m... When she came home, she slammed the dishwasher and threw bruised apples and stale chips in our lunch bags.” As she struggles with her parents’ illness and her own mortality, she attempts to harness her anger in this way, willing it to submit to a series of yoga poses, or to a serving of coffee and chocolate, but with tempered success. Still, the poem itself is not angry. She describes the anger the was a psychiatrist might, asking you to envision your anger as some other being you could leave outside the door or lock in a box that you might move on with your life, free of this burden. Later, in section III of the collection, in the midst of a pastoral moment of description, she states matter of factly, “I almost forget My Anger out there in all that green” (“My Anger at Home”). McGookey is curiously aware of her own anger, allowing bits of beauty and peace to shine through even the most trying experiences.

Throughout the course of this collection, McGookey experiences the full span of the life cycle: from the birth of her first child to the illness and death of both her parents. “When would the gentleness come?” she asks, and we wonder the same (“Almost Sweet”). Somehow, it does. Not all at once, but as gentleness does, in small doses over time. By the end, we feel we have been through the trenches with McGookey, emerging on the other side where “grief is barely a shadow now” (“Here, Where I Am, in October”), where we hope to stay.

Men Like That: A Southern Queer History, by John Howard

We don't usually associate thriving queer culture with rural America, but John Howard's unparalleled history of queer life in the South persuasively debunks the myth that same-sex desires can't find expression outside the big city. In fact, this book shows that the nominally conservative institutions of small-town life—home, church, school, and workplace—were the very sites where queer sexuality flourished. As Howard recounts the life stories of the ordinary and the famous, often in their own words, he also locates the material traces of queer sexuality in the landscape: from the farmhouse to the church social, from sports facilities to roadside rest areas.

Spanning four decades, Men Like That complicates traditional notions of a post-WWII conformist wave in America. Howard argues that the 1950s, for example, were a period of vibrant queer networking in Mississippi, while during the so-called "free love" 1960s homosexuals faced aggressive oppression. When queer sex was linked to racial agitation and when key civil rights leaders were implicated in homosexual acts, authorities cracked down and literally ran the accused out of town.

In addition to firsthand accounts, Men Like That finds representations of homosexuality in regional pulp fiction and artwork, as well as in the number one pop song about a suicidal youth who jumps off the Tallahatchie Bridge. And Howard offers frank, unprecedented assessments of outrageous public scandals: a conservative U.S. congressman caught in the act in Washington, and a white candidate for governor accused of patronizing black transgender sex workers.

The first book-length history of the queer South, Men Like That completely reorients our presuppositions about gay identity and about the dynamics of country life.

From Publishers Weekly
For three decades, social historians have claimed that for gay people, sexual freedom was only found in cities because rural areas were draconian in their regulation of nontraditional sexual practices. In this groundbreaking and engrossing analysis of gay male life in postwar Mississippi, Howard, a professor of American Studies at the University of York, boldly demonstrates that gay culture and sex not only existed but flourished in small towns and agricultural communities throughout the state. Supporting his challenging argument with a compelling mixture of postmodern theory, reportage, cultural analysis, conjecture and personal anecdote, Howard not only convinces but paints a vivid, complex and often startling portrait of the lives of Southern gay men between 1945 and 1985. While the 55 personal interviews and oral histories--which are alternately funny, poignant, informative and sometimes unsettling--form the emotional backbone of the book, Howard is terrific at explicating obvious homosexual content in popular culture. His reading of the gay themes in Bobbie Gentry's 1967 country hit "Ode to Billy Joe" and of [Frank] Hains's spirited defenses of homosexuality in his popular entertainment column in the Jackson Daily News from 1955 to 1975, and Howard's own interpretation of an infamous murder trial, support his thesis that homosexuality was anything but hidden. Most provocative of all, however, is Howard's innovative analysis of how gay sexual activity and homophobia fueled and shaped white resistance to the black civil rights movement. (Nov.)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Howard (lecturer, American history, Univ. of York) provides a stirring analysis of gay male life in Mississippi from the end of World War II to the onset of the AIDS crisis. The author reveals that contrary to popular belief, gay culture not only existed but also thrived in the state's small towns and rural areas. Homes, churches, schools, and workplaces saw prospering gay sexuality. Howard's account depicts historical periods of great progress and times of extreme oppression. While the 1950s were years of "queer networking," the days of heady sexuality in the 1960s were a time of hostile oppression. Most controversially, Howard reveals how gay sexual behavior and homophobia prompted white resistance to the Civil Rights movement. Men Like That will confront and challenge readers' thinking about gay life in the South and rural America. Recommended for all gay studies collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
With a scrupulous eye for detail, Howard traces the evolution of homosexual identities in Mississippi from 1945 to 1985 and, in the process, offers a perceptive look into queer lives away from America's urban centers. Howard (American History/Univ. of York, England) takes a twin approach in his history, recounting and contextualizing the oral histories of queer Mississippians, as well as uncovering queer lives through documents of historical record. Howard's informants provide an insider's view into how gay networks developed and evolved in rural Mississippi, how men found one another despite the manifold dangers of discovery involved. Concluding against the conventional wisdom that the 1950s were a period of sexual repression, Howard explores how queer men of the time carried on a lifestyle pulsating with sexuality, through an analysis of their lives at home, school, church, college, and work. He also argues that for gay men in Mississippi, the 1960s brought about a tightening of sexual codes (in order to combat racial activism), which ended with disastrous results for the many men whose lives and careers were ruined after they were exposed as homosexuals. The stories that Howard uncoversthe murder of a gay interior decorator in 1955, a congressman's sex scandal, and queer rumors in a gubernatorial election among themparade an eclectic cast of characters through the wilds of Mississippi's queer life and the thickets of public opinion. Complementing Howard's historical analysis is his reading of queer representations in the media, including physique art, pulp fiction, and Bobbie Gentry's song ``Ode to Billy Joe.'' With his clear methodology and circumspect analysis, Howard creates a history remarkable in its complexity yet intimate in its portraiture. At long last an intimate and full vision of queer lives in America that did not unfold in San Francisco's discos. (22 b&w photos) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Men Like That
By Stan Farwig
A wonderful book, a revolutionary book, a truthfully human book. Make no mistake: this is not a dense sociological-historical work distanced by academic patois one plows through for what insights might be obscured therein, but a scholarly work marked by clean prose and a clean treatment of male-to male sex, employinging the language that most often informs such experiences as they are experienced. John Howard's oral and regional histories, insights and analysis extend in so many directions, opens up so many spaces that extended and opened up this reader's awareness, not the least of which was how mislead conventional concepts of male sexuality have been.

From a Current Mississippian
By Kenneth Hendricks
I had to write a short review on this book. Seeing as I am a current (and lifelong) gay resident of Mississippi, I was delighted to find a history of the places that I frequented during my youth. The book is titled after a line in the movie "Ode to Billie Joe," which was based on the song of the same name by Bobbie Gentry. I of course, remember this song and how all of us speculated on exactly what was thrown off the Tallahatchie bridge. I have a really special(?) memory of the movie, because it was the first time I ever took a girl on a date, and lo and behold, it was a movie about a gay man in Mississippi. (Did anyone ever ever think that the song or the movie might be about being gay in Mississippi?) Talk about irony. I may be somewhat prejudiced about it but I really believe that this book was written not just as a history of the gay experience in the South, but as a pointed evaluation of what has actually changed regarding homosexual life in Mississippi. There have been a number of books detailing the gay experience in Mississippi lately (Mississippi Sissy is the first one that comes to mind), but this one is a real history of what has happened to gay Mississipians in the last 40-50 years. I especially loved the detailed investigations into the experiences of Jon Hinson and Bill Allain. And I want to thank John Howard for bringing to the fore the modern institutions and expressions of gay life in Mississippi. The majority may hate us, but we're here and we're still queer.

A travelogue disguised as the ending of a fantasy series
By David Roy
I've been a fan of Terry Brooks' Shannara series ever since the first book. The series is both interesting in its own right, yet wrapped in a familiarity that's very pleasant to the fantasy reader. The main knock against the later books in the series is that Brooks' characters tend to be very similar to previous versions. The entire Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series has suffered from this affliction. Not only that, but Brooks seems like he has been treading water with this series. The third and final book, Morgawr, is more of the same: comfortable, yet just a little too familiar. Rabid Brooks fans will definitely love it. Other Brooks fans will find that they enjoyed it, but it left them feeling a little bit empty, like having eaten some Chinese food and feeling hungry a couple of hours later.
The main problem with Morgawr is that it is basically a runaround. The main characters run, the Morgawr and his mwellrats pursue them. Some of the party runs into a monster, some action happens, and it's over. It all builds to a final confrontation that's obvious from the beginning, and it can take forever to get there. Doctor Who fans may be familiar with the "endless corridor" aspect of that show, where it seems like most of the story consists of the characters running back and forth down corridors. This book had much the same feeling, only on a larger scale.
There are also a series of coincidences and other illogical happenings that make the eyes roll. The party regroups in a much too easy way after being separated for so long. They basically run into each other. A few of them are better explained, having been found by Hunter Predd and his roc, a huge bird with very keen eyesight who has been patrolling the area in the air. However, the others are just a chance meeting that strains credulity to the limit. Not only that, but the Ilse Witch wakes from her catatonia in order to heal somebody, and gives Bek a vital clue that he needs, before returning to her catatonic state. The clue makes this happening very important, but I don't really buy the ultimate reasoning for why it happened.
The characters in Morgawr aren't bad, and Brooks has no qualms about killing some of them. This is a very bloody book (series, actually, since it started in the first book). Again, though, the characters are very similar to characters in past Shannara series, and the recognition factor jars. Bek is pretty much the same as previous Ohmsfords, Quenten Leah is like the Leahs of old, with his magic Sword of Leah. The Rovers are, as a group, similar to characters in the previous two series. At least the two main Rovers, Redden Alt Mer and Rue Meridian, are fairly distinctive, and interesting in their own right. This is not to say that the characters aren't interesting, because for the most part they are. I just wish they were different. They're comfortable characters, however, and fans of the series will like them. If this is the first Shannara series you've read, you won't notice this and will probably enjoy them in their own right.
The final problem to mention is Brooks' tendency to have is characters brood. They do this a lot, and the most annoying times are when the characters are in danger, or waiting for danger to come to them. It's not unusual for a character to be on guard, or watching for something to come at them, and spend one or two pages brooding about his or her circumstances, what's happened on this mission, friends who have died, or whatever. For me, it breaks the tension rather than adding to it. I kept saying to myself "would you please stop thinking and just get on with it?" And since the characters are usually brooding about similar things (the events since they arrived here), it also gets a bit repetitious as well.
Still, it is an enjoyable series to read, even more so if you've never read a Shannara book before. Brooks really has a talent for action scenes, and when they happen they are usually exciting. You do care for the characters and they are three-dimensional for the most part. You never know whether a character is safe or not, which also adds to the tension. Brooks kills off quite a number of them. I really enjoyed the finale, as the Morgawr, who has been shown to be much more powerful than any magic Bek or the Ilse Witch have, is defeated by brains rather than "a lucky shot" or something like that.
While I enjoy the Shannara books, and give this one just over 3 stars, part of me wishes Brooks would leave Shannara for awhile, or at least try to do something new with it. The concept of the Jerle Shannara series *is* new, with a voyage across the sea, but he wraps it in too many familiarities for this reader. If this is your first exposure to Brooks, then it's not so bad, and you will be entertained. I guess that's not a bad thing.

A Thrilling Conclusion to the "Voyage" Series
By Jeffrey T. Munson
Terry Brooks has written another masterpiece. This book is truly exciting and left me on edge throughout. In this installment, he focuses on the group of adventurers after the destruction of Antrax, the evil magical force from book two. Druid Walker Boh has been left mortally wounded from his encounter with Antrax, and the Ilse Witch was forced to confront her evil doings by the Sword of Shannara. The Witch, who has finally accepted that she is Grianne Ohmsford, Bek's sister, withdraws deep within herself after seeing the vision in the Sword. She is unable to forgive herself for what she had become and completely shut herself off from everyone, including Bek. However, Bek is determined to break through to her and release her from her trance-like state. Meanwhile, the evil Morgawr, a magical creature thousands of years old and the trainer of the Ilse Witch, has commandeered a fleet of airships to seek out the Witch and destroy her. He will stop at nothing until the Witch is either dead or he has sucked the lifeforce from her. There are many adventures throughout as the Morgawr attemts to capture the Witch and as the group tries to escape. The airship battles are told in vivid detail, as well as the various encounters the group comes upon.
The book is excellent. I could not put it down. It is loaded with action and adventure on every page and left me wanting more. The ending is a real cliff hanger and sets the stage for the next trilogy, which is due to start next year. I highly recommend this book. It is a fitting conclusion to the "Voyage" trilogy.

"Your Time for Regret will be Short..."
By R. M. Fisher
"Morgawr" is the third and last book in Terry Brook's "Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" trilogy, which concerns the last of the triad of villains that the "Jerle Shannara"s crew goes up against. In the previous two books "Ilse Witch" and "Antrax" the Druid Walker led a range of characters to the faraway island of Parkasia in order to find a great treasure trove of ancient knowledge. Stalked by the Ilse Witch and then attacked by the archaic machinery of the Antrax, the crew found themselves utterly divided. Walker has been fatally wounded by the Antrax after unsuccessfully attempting to gain this treasure, but now bids Bek to save the one thing that they can salvage from the mission: the Ilse Witch.

Bek Ohmsford and the mysterious shape-shifter Truls Rokh are attempting to convince the Ilse Witch that she is not only Bek's sister Grianne Ohmsford, but that her mentor the Morgawr was the one that killed her parents - not Walker as she had been led to believe. After the truth is revealed to her by the magic of the Sword of Shannara, she slips into a state of catatonia that Bek cannot awaken her from. Meanwhile, the elf prince Ahren Elessedil and the seer Ryer Ord Star have retrieved the long-lost Elfstones only to find themselves captured by the Morgawr who seeks to use them in the attempt to trap the rest of the crew.

Everyone else is engaged in fairly dull activities: Quentin Leah does a lot of walking, and Rue Meridian, her brother Redder Alt Mer and the Wing Rider Hunter Predd take control of "Black Moclips" only to abandon it in a storm - a needless and pointless plot line. Panax's presence in the story is still a mystery. With the Antrax gone and the Ilse Witch converted, the story basically follows the surviving members of the crew trying to find one another, flee the island and avoid the Morgawr and his crew of reptilian Mwellrets.

The problem with this is that for all intents and purposes, the voyage is over. They came, they looked for the treasure, they didn't actually get the treasure (making the whole trip fairly pointless) and now they're leaving again. There is no sense of moving forward, only going back, and as such it's less interesting. To make things worse, the Morgawr is a rather humdrum bad guy, with nothing of the Ilse Witch's mystery or the Antrax's incorporeal threat. This is just a bad guy that wants to kill the goodies, because that's what bad guys do.

There are more problems: the love story between Bek and Rue is forced and unconvincing, there are more pointless encounters (including a man-eating plant) and it ends on a silly "here we go again" note. There are endless sermons on the nature of love and loyalty, and often the long-winded dialogue that Brooks gives his characters is painfully unnatural and often repetitive: "They fly no flag, and their crews act like dead men...the ones he could see were men, but they didn't act like men. They acted like machines. They didn't look as if they were alive. They were all still and empty-eyed." This sentence could be boiled down to half this length, without making the speaker sound like a robot and the reader like an idiot that has to have the situation pounded into him a number of times.

Neither Ryer nor Truls is given a satisfactory send-off, and the conclusion of the story screams "sequels are coming!" And in fact they are - Brooks continues his story in a new trilogy called "The High Druid". The fact that the treasure itself ended up being inaccessible and the mission switched instead to Grianne, makes the entire thing seem like one big introduction to this next series of books.

It was a promising start, and an interesting middle, but this final book is only worth reading in order to finish what you started --and see if Brooks can bring himself to let just one Elf Hunter (ie, nameless extra crew-member) to survive. Don't count on it.

Vietnam: A Quick Guide to Customs & Culture
By D. D.
As the title says, the book is a quick guide to Vietnamese customs and etiquette. It does not go into great depth but covers the subjects overall pretty well. I'd recommend it. Contents include how to avoid culture shock; Vietnamese attitudes and values; historical and political background; religion, customs, and traditions; the Vietnamese at home; leisure, social, and cultural life; dos, don'ts, and taboos; body language; hospitality, food, and drink; giving and receiving gifts; business briefing; and language and communications. That's a lot to cover in 168 pages in a pocket sized book. I'd also recommend "Vietnam Today" by Mark A. Ashwill for a little more depth.

Out of Date
By Annie D
This might have been a little useful five years ago when it was first published, but it is quite out of date in 2011. I would not recommend purchasing it until, and if, it is updated. Vietnamese people have really moved forward in the last decade and are currently a bustling and very capitalistic society. Also, it is relatively superficial and provides relatively little of practical use.

Vietnam - Land of Smiles!
By Anthony P. O'Donnell
It's a cliché in our consumer-oriented world to say that yet another new device or accessory is "must-have". Even so, I don't hesitate to say that for the intending traveller to Vietnam this little book, clearly designed to fit easily into the pocket or backpack pouch, is a must-have item.
I write with some authority because, although I've not yet been to Vietnam, I have a Vietnamese wife who in turn has Vietnamese children and numerous relatives and friends from her homeland and who now live here in Australia.
This means that my exposure to many aspects of their culture has been and is reached from the privileged position of head of our small family. I can therefore vouch for the accuracy of much of the excellent advice Mr Murray has provided in this book.
That I can't give my blessing to the whole of the contents is not a reflection on the author, or those contents, but rather is my bowing to his vastly superior knowledge of both the people and the land he describes. In other words I found, in spite of my experience, there was much for me to learn, and indeed one reading is not sufficient to take in and retain all that he has to offer.
In recent years Vietnam has been re-discovered. After decades of civil war followed by more decades of dislocation and isolation this little country is finally emerging again, and in doing so is giving the lie to the view that it is a hostile place. Far from it, visitors from around the world are being surprised by its beauty and charm.
So, if you're planning a trip to the land of these friendly and hospitable people, or even if you're merely curious about them, their ancient culture, and their long and fascinating history, I can only repeat, "Culture Smart - VIETNAM" by Geoffrey Murray is a compact, sensitive, authoritative, informative, easy-to-read, must-have.
